The agenda was rearranged to accommodate those who would have to leave earlier.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Archives: Bob Cabigas reported that the organ donated by the Trinity Church, which had been bought originally in memory of Letty Perez' mother in 1949, was moved into the second rented storage unit.
Historians: Deanna and Moreno Balantac circulated the latest chapter album which includes some 2002 and 2003 activities. They need photos from the UPCC event and the Troke Library exhibit. They presented the Historian Committee written report for 2003: "The Stockton FANHS Chapter Photo Album with photos and articles taken by and received from Chapter members has been continually updated throughout the year. It is available for review by the membership at each regular meeting. Expenses to December 13, 2003, include the following: Film, photo processing, pages and misc. office supplies.... $50.00" Deanna and Moreno donated the total expenses to the chapter for 2003. They were thanked by President Terri Torres.
Exhibit: Anita Bautista reported on the Troke Library exhibit during the month of November which included photos from the archives and from Fernando Saldevar's collection. Those helping in setting up the exhibit were Virgie Melear, Fernando Saldevar and Jerry Paular. One evening Anita presented a lecture describing the history of Filipino immigrants and the reason "Little Manila" came into existence. The exhibit was received so favorably, that other branches of the library plan to show the exhibit, too. Anita reported that Troke Library presented FANHS with $100.00 honorarium. It was M/S/P (Norma Espiritu/Mel LaGasca) that the money go toward purchasing Filipino-American reference books for Troke Library.
Membership: Violet Dutra reported a membership of 175, which included a new member who joined just before the meeting started. Anchita Querido, sponsored by Maria Vea, was introduced. Other new members this month include student Roger Bueno, and seniors Paz Concordia and Raquel Santa Ana. A get well card was sent to Marilyn Guida.
At this point the meeting was recessed for each person to introduce themselves. Then Vice President Mel LaGasca presented to Terri as outgoing president a poinsettia plant, a "thank you" balloon, and a special Certificate of Appreciation together with a photograph showing Terri with Mrs. Paula Daclan at the 2002 Recognition Award event.
During this intermission a drawing was held for a beautiful decorated basket donated by Mary Louise Lopez. Winner was Deanna Balantac.
OFFICER REPORTS:
President Terri Torres again reviewed her plans to be traveling between Stockton and Wichita, Kansas, and that she will still assist with publishing the newsletter, in keeping the membership list and web page current and help as possible from Wichita. She will be returning to Stockton again in February for a week or two.
Vice President Mel LaGasca reported that the Museum Project is progressing. Some changes are being made in the Business Plan. He will hold a Museum Committee as soon as he is able.
Norma Espiritu reported that as of this date the UPCC event held on October 28 had raised over $24,000, and that funds are still arriving. After all the expenses are paid, there will probably be more that $16,000 realized for the Museum Fund. Thank you letters are being sent to sponsors who could not attend together with a copy of the program and an invitation to keep pledging toward the museum fund, with a return envelope enclosed. She distributed pledge letters to those present to give out to friends. This time of the year is a good time to get people to donate to worthy causes. She encouraged FANHS to have representatives go to each organization who assisted with the UPCC event to thank them for their involvement and continued assistance.
Treasurer Virgie Melear reported that she will be submitting a year-end report to National FANHS. A discussion followed concerning the amount of money being generated by Museum Fundraising, and the importance of meticulous reports in order to meet income tax requirements. Terri reminded the chapter that we are part of National and that the national office needs this information for their records. The fact that we were blessed with the donation from Anita and the proceeds from the concert puts National in the position of having to report those funds, too. A discussion followed in which it was brought out that the museum committee may decide to have a separate account for its funds, and possibly its own treasurer.
Terri reviewed the costs for newsletters and monthly mailers, which was approximately $800. Violet reported that the membership committee spent $75, of which $32.08 was donated. Terri encouraged all committees to present a 2003 cost summary in January.
Secretary Violet Dutra distributed correspondence from Haggin Museum about a history contest for 11th and 12th graders, a thank you from Jacoby Center for participating at the Dec. 6 Arts and Crafts Multicultural Fair. Anita and Virgie had set up an informational/FANHSing table and circulated among the participants, networking with those present.
The November 1, 2003 minutes were approved as circulated (Mangrobang/Balantac).
Fund Raising: Violet Dutra reported on the Magical Night of Giving at Weberstown, November 23. 90 tickets were sold with a total of $450 for the Museum Fund. (There are two more persons who owe $10 each to pay.)
A discussion was held about holding a fundraiser in April for the Museum. Norma suggested joining FILMAPS on April 2 for a crab feed and combined fundraiser. The suggestion was approved. It was felt that different organizations should cooperate with each other to avoid too many events at the same time.
NEW OFFICERS NOMINATIONS: After nominations from the floor, elections were held:
Slate of New Officers:
President: Mel LaGasca
Vice President: Anita Bautista
Recording Secretary: Deanna Balantac
Treasurer: Virgie Melear
ANNOUNCEMENT: Sacramento FANHS chapter will be holding its installation of new officers at the Manila Restaurant on January 22, 2004 in the evening. Contact Anita Bautista or Jerry Paular for tickets.
Virgie Melear plans to hold a workshop on preparing exhibits and what is available in the archives. A date will be announced as soon as plans are completed. It was suggested that such a workshop could be held prior to a meeting.
Meeting was adjourned at 3:30 P.M.
Next meeting will be held at Dameron Hospital, 10 AM, in Conference Room B on Saturday, January 3. 2004.
