OFFICER REPORTS:

President Terri Torres reported that the "Untold Triumph" film showing would be held at UOP on February 22. An informational flyer was distributed. Everyone able to donate finger foods for the refreshments from 5:30 to 6:30 is encouraged to do so.

Terri presented an update on the UOP storytelling project, stating she had sent a support letter from our chapter as discussed at the last meeting, as well as sending in a form describing the amount of time we will spend on the project.

The latest issue of National's newsletter, "Generations", was circulated. The next Trustee meeting will be held on March 8 and 9, 2003, at Albuquerque, New Mexico. Terri and Mel plan to attend as current trustees.

The archiving class held at the Sacramento Museum Resource Center was described as being an educational and enlightening program. A letter of appreciation will be sent to the museum staff.

Vice President Mel LaGasca reported that he is taking the docent course at San Joaquin County Historical Museum at Micke's Grove. He is working on the business plan for the National Museum, which he hopes to present to Delta College's Small Business Department. He plans to resume regular meetings of the museum committee.

Mel stated that a meeting was held with Tony Somera and his wife, Sally, on August 30. Also present were Terri Torres, Virgie Melear, Anita Bautista and Violet Dutra. The topic was that of having a museum fundraiser in conjunction with the annual conference of the Escrima groups, which features Danny Inosanto, also a FANHS member. It was suggested that there be a dinner/dance with a "40's and 50's" theme, to cost $25 per person, $40 per couple, with a door prize. The evening could include such novelties as "Dime a Dance", "Social Box", etc. For the music Tony has contacted Fred Yurong, who has consented to play for no charge. Mel will look into reserving the Social Hall at the Filipino Center for the event. The food would be provided similar to that of the awards dinner last October. Details will be outlined in the future.

Treasurer Virgie Melear reported $10,628 in museum CD, $98.67 in savings, and $5674.33 in checking, with several bills to be paid and money to be transferred to the museum CD.

Secretary Violet Dutra circulated a flyer from Haggin Museum outlining upcoming events, including the music and dance spectacular by the Helobung Cultural Troupe from the Philippine Islands on February 15, 2003.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

Membership: Violet Dutra reported a membership of 142, with five new members, including one lifetime family membership. She welcomed one of the new members; Dr. Grace Barzaga.

Historians: Moreno and Deanna Balantac circulated a photo album of the chapter's past events and thanked members for their contributions and requested for all to continue to do so.

Fundraising: Violet Dutra reported, due to the fact that a museum fundraiser is being held in August, there would not be a dessert/dance in the spring. The monthly presentations will continue with the next one on March 1, 2003 being the showing of the film, "Jose Rizal: The Man, The Hero, The Filipino".

NEW BUSINESS:

Terri introduced guest Fran Fiel and her son, Lionel, representing the Philippine Cultural and Historical Association, a non-profit organization based in Hercules, California, which is holding its annual Fiesta Filipiniana, on June 21, 2003. They are asking for help in making the event a success and would like to meet with those who could do so. They need entertainment suggestions, etc. Stockton members who will be able to help are asked to contact Terri by E-mail. Fran is contacting other FANHS chapters in the Bay Area to participate.

Cornelius and Connie Pasquil of the Daguhoy Lodge were introduced. They were instrumental in getting approval from the city Planning Commission to present the lodge as a historical site to the City Council. They are planning a fundraiser for March 16, 2003, at the McFall Center. Future plans are to bring the Lodge up to code and maintain it for member use.

Dawn Mabalon was introduced as the chair of the Little Manila Foundation. She introduced Elena Mangahas, Dillon Delvo, Addie Saguitan, and Florence Quilantang as members of the Foundation. She voiced the concern that some of the remaining buildings in the Little Manila Historical District may be torn down for a parking lot. After a discussion of possible strategies, it was M/S/P (M. Balantac/D. Balantac) to write a memorandum of understanding for Dawn to take to Manny Fernandez (a developer involved in a current plan to develop the Little Manila area per the request of some of the people in the Chinese community) before the buildings are torn down. A meeting will be held with Dawn to decide on the wording of the MOU.

The meeting adjourned at 1:30 P.M.

Next meeting will be held on March 1, 2003 at Dameron Hospital Conference Room A (basement) at 10:00 A.M. with a showing of the film, "Jose Rizal: The Man, The Hero, The Filipino."
