Healdton, Oklahoma

Rhue-nell McClanahan

Broadway - during the 1960s, she
began a career on Broadway, performing in such
shows as MacBird, Sticks and Stones, and Plaza
Suite. In 1964, she landed a role in the
theatrical production of "The Secret Life of
Walter Mitty."
Before "Maude" - in
the early 1970s she began starring in films and
was given a role in the soap opera, Another
World.
"All In The Family" -
appeared in "All In The Family" 's
episode #44 "The Bunkers And The
Swingers" which aired on October 28, 1972.
"Maude" - Norman Lear
was so impressed by Rue's tremendous talent and
ability in "All In The Family" that he
decided to cast her in the series,
"Maude," as Maude Findlay's best
friend, Vivian Cavender-Harmon. She first
appeared in episode #9 "Maude's
Dilemma" (Part 1) on November 14, 1972 as a
guest appearance. By the end of the first season
on into the second season, she became a more
frequent guest star, becoming a cast member by
episode #44 "The Investment" which
aired February 19, 1974. The series ended after
the sixth season on April 22, 1978.
After "Maude" - Norman
Lear offered her a television series of her own,
entitled "Apple Pie" but unfortunately,
the show only lasted two episodes.
"Mama's Family" - in
1983, she was offered a role in the comedy series
"Mama's Family." While on the set of
"Mama's Family," she was taken to the
emergency room over a severe gall bladder attack.
After the operation, she developed Adult
Respiratory Distress Syndrome. In 1985, she left
the show because she was not happy with her role.
"The Golden Girls" -
in 1985, she began starring in the NBC series,
"The Golden Girls" portraying a
Southern, highly confident, and over-sexed,
Blanche Devereaux. On May 9, 1992, after 180
episodes, "The Golden Girls" ended its
seven-year run.
"The Golden Palace" -
in 1992, three of the four cast of "The
Golden Girls" went on in the follow-up
series, "The Golden Palace" which
lasted one season.
After "The Golden Palace" -
on June 6, 1997 she was diagnosed with breast
cancer, and on December 25, 1997, she married her
current husband Morrow Wilson. |
