#23 "Walter's
Problem" (Part 1)

Production Code - 203After a night
of heavy drinking, Maude wakes up in bed with
Arthur. Maude, Walter, and Arthur vow they will
not drink for a month. Walter breaks the vow,
which results in Maude drinking also, and getting
drunk. The drunken Findlays discuss whether
Walter has a drinking problem. When drunken
Walter destroys Phillip's birthday cake, Maude
discovers Walter has a problem. Walter does not
agree and becomes enraged, and slaps Maude.

Walter finally accepts he has a problem and talks
with a reverend, when Carol informs she and
Phillip are moving out, due to Carol not wanting
Phillip to go up around an alcoholic.

gifts. He plans for he and Maude to spend the day
together, only to have upset Vivian come to Maude
for sympathy. When Maude cannot rid herself of
Vivian, Walter storms out. Vivian finds Walter,
telling him Maude has taken pills. Walter rushes
home to find that Maude has only taken aspirin.

facelift. Maude then starts wondering about
herself getting a facelift, finally deciding to
do so, only not knowing if Walter would approve.

she wants.

Carol and Vivian, Maude arrives home from having
a facelift. Maude has given Carol orders to keep
Walter home for her arrival to surprise him with
her new face. However, Walter unknown to Maude's
facelift leaves for a haircut. Maude gets very
upset that Walter is not the first to see her,
but unveils anyway. Walter arrives home not
noticing the change, upsetting Maude.

her, causing Maude to be blamed for breaking up
the marriage. The Evans gets back together, while
the Findlays argue.

her thirty-one years ago on a date. Against
Walter's wishes, Maude confronts him and he still
denies knowing her. Maude then reenacts the
incident, causing him to remember, but
differently.
