Walter is embarrassed while being awarded for Tuckahoe's Businessman of the Year, when Maude bursts in late during the annual presentation. Walter become angered when he learns why his wife was late, she had gotten news that she has been asked to run for the New York Senate. Walter demands that Maude forget the entire idea or he will move out.

Unknowingly Maude and Walter are invited separately to the Harmon's Wedding Anniversary Party. Maude is at the party with her date, Senator Bob Myers when Walter arrives with his date, Kathy, a young, happy, and "friendly" woman he met a few hours earlier in an elevator. Walter and Maude try to talk their marriage over once more but all fails again, with Walter "falling off the wagon." Later when Maude goes to check on drunken Walter, she is shocked to find him sleeping in bed with someone else.

After finding Walter in bed with someone else last night, Maude feels her marriage is really over. After telling Vivian about her findings, Vivian goes to Walter's apartment to tell him what a terrible person he is, only to find out that Walter in reality spent the night in bed with drunken Arthur. When Walter arrives to tell Maude what really happened, he finds out he was not the only one to have an over night visitor, Senator Bob Myers had spent the night in Maude's den. To repair her marriage Maude decides to drop out of the race for senate, however Walter says for her to stay in the race and he will be by her side.

After voting, Maude, Walter, and Carol proceed to Maude's victory party. When Maude enters the room, she expects many people, however the only ones there are the bartender and the band members. Maude is heartbroken until Arthur and Vivian arrive and explain that no one arrives until after the polls have closed.

While Vivian and Arthur are on vacation, Maude cares for Vivian's pampered, spoiled and vicious fox terrier, Chuck. When Walter finds Chuck dead, Maude becomes very upset, dreading to tell Vivian about her little dog. When Vivian arrives home and finds out about Chuck she becomes very upset blaming Maude. Maude agrees to pay for Chuck's funeral and Vivian forgives Maude.

When Mrs. Naugatuck accidentally leaves an unknown address behind, Maude speculates that she is accommodating a man with his own apartment. Upon confronting Mrs. Naugatuck at the address, Maude learns Mrs. Naugatuck has her own get away apartment.

While Maude and Vivian are eating lunch at a restaurant, Maude notices Vivian's ex-husband, Chuck. Chuck has changed greatly with a new beard, lots of hair, and a new style. While at a party at the Findlay's, Chuck invites Vivian to lunch with him the next day. Arthur says it is all right with him, although the next day Maude goes to ask Chuck to call Vivian and cancel the date. Chuck complies with Maude's wishes, only to make the same moves on Maude as he did on Vivian. In the end Maude and Vivian find out Chuck is as unlucky and drab as they remember.

Carol being the only one to tell the truth, that Arthur, Vivian, and Mrs. Naugatuck were all drunk, fell against the table, and broke the bowl.

Maude starts a Presidential Campaign for Henry Fonda to run for President. Walter is upset when she spend most of their money on the campaign. After consulting with a psychiatrist, Walter learns that Maude has a mental disorder in which makes her act on hair-brain impulses. Walter is unconvinced of the doctor's prognosis until Maude becomes very depressed when Henry Fonda turns her nomination down.

Maude is putting together the Tuckahoe Bicentennial Pageant. Arthur with his connections to the army has gotten an auditorium. When Maude decides to have the pageant an all women pageant, Arthur, Walter, and the Colonel Reikert oppose. With the pageant sold out, the opposing men must agree and the pageant goes on as planned.

Mrs. Naugatuck is studying for her US citizenship, when she starts having problems remembering things and spacing out. When Arthur is told of Mrs. Naugatuck' s problem, he diagnoses her as having small strokes. She is hospitalized the day before she is to try for her citizenship, so Maude arranges for her to take her test in the hospital.

Shocked Maude refuses to take the rejection and demands she cannot be refused.

While Mrs. Naugatuck is away on vacation, Maude hires an ex-convict to be her temporary housekeeper. Maude does not question the reason he spent time in prison, however Vivian researches and find that his former employers were poisoned through the food in which he prepared for them. Petrified, the Findlays and Harmons hesitate to eat their dinners, before questioning whether he was responsible for the deaths of his former employers.
