Walter and the Harmons call Maude a "hypocrite," when she feels obligated to visit the funeral home, when Hattie Flanagan, a woman everyone dislikes passes away. Vivian dreads going with Maude, because she has never attended a funeral before. While viewing Hattie, Maude and Vivian discover Hattie is wearing a brooch that is Arthur's old family heirloom.

Shortly afterward, Bert is laid off from his job, which causes financial concerns to him. To mend things, Maude suggests the two live together in the apartment above her garage. However, when they move in, Bert demands they live together in a brother/sister relationship, because they are not married.

After receiving news that he did not get the loan, Walter and Maude consult with Walter's accountant, who advises Walter to file bankruptcy. Walter is bombarded with trash, when he announces his bankruptcy at the Tuckahoe's Businessman of the Year awards.

Carol eventually finds him in front of his store with a duck and brings him ho me. Because of his depression, Walter takes an overdose of sleeping pills.

Maude goes to see Walter at the hospital and finds him strapped to the bed. Walter feels everyone thinks he is crazy, while Arthur informs Maude that Walter must go to a mental hospital, to make sure he does not try to commit suicide again. After a week at the mental hospital, Walter decided to runaway from life and stay at the institution.

Maude is excited about the election, while Carol and her new, political active boyfriend Lee, whom Maude has never met, are going away for the weekend. When Maude finally meets Lee, she discovers he is eleven years younger than Carol. Maude becomes very upset over the age difference and invites Lee's parents over to talk. When Lee's parents do not approve of the relationship, saying Carol has a reputation, Maude defends her daughter, and no longer disapproves of the couple.

At first Maude does not want to participate in the show, until she finds out, the winning prize is a trip to Italy. After winning, Maude and Vivian lose their prizes, because of where they got their tickets.

Maude tells Vivian about the dream in which she tells Arthur, causing Arthur to worry about his masculinity and be uncomfortable on a fishing trip with Walter.

Shortly after Marshall's arrival, Maude discovers Marshall thinks he is Captain Hero, a super hero, whom protects the innocent people that are afraid of evil. While Maude is talking with the potential sponsor, Captain Hero, whom she has hidden in the den, comes out of hiding and jeopardizes the deal.

Maude becomes upsets, when Mrs. Naugatuck and Bert throw a party inviting the Harmons but not the Findlay's. Later when Maude and Carol are alone in Mrs. Naugatuck apartment, Maude accidentally breaks the urn containing Mrs. Naugatuck's late husband, Seral's ashes. To gather the ashes back, Maude uses a vacuum cleaner. When Mrs. Naugatuck discovers Maude's actions, she and Maude argue, resulting in Maude firing her. The two patch up their friendship before Mrs. Naugatuck and Bert leave for Ireland.

Maude and Vivian are on the subway, when a black woman sits beside Maude. When the woman is getting off the subway, Maude accidentally tears the woman's dress, while trying to stop her, to confront her with stealing her wallet. Later the woman comes to the Findlay home, demanding payment on her torn dress. Maude finally discovers her wallet was not stolen, and apologizes along with hiring her as her new maid.
