--------Our trip to Gibraltar (1985)

I went to British colony of Gibraltar in the summer of 1985 with my friend Dave.We crossed the border at the Spanish town of Linea after stopping in Algeciras. Linea is a town of about 50,000. Gibraltar in 2007 had a population of 28 000 people. Gibraltar covers an area of 6.5 square km.

There is a way to get to the top of the rock, a height of 1 396 feet, by using the cable car. In 2007, an adult ticket was 6.5 pounds. Back in 1985 we were trying to save every penny; there is a set of stairs and roads that lead to the top. It is a great exercise and you are rewarded with magnificent views of the port.

On our way we saw a cave above our heads and I tried to reach it by grabbing a fence dangerously. I thought that I was discovering an “unexplored cave”, but the cave was minuscule and loaded with toilet paper and more brown stuff. .

Some of the places we visited were St-Michael's Cave ,a large Grotto where they even have classical concerts. It was my first experience in a cave. it's reknown for its stalagmites and stalactites.

We also visited the Princess Caroline’s Battery, a set of canons pointed towards the straight of Gibraltar .We had fun hanging on those canons upside down with the minuscule buildings below us and the sea shining in the horizon. We had a blast.

We went to the Upper Rock Nature Reserve where we have spectacular views of the strait. It is scary when you look down into the water.

Lower down we met with the most famous locals the Macaques the only wild primates in Europe. You can find them in the middle cable station , at the top station or Great Siege Tunnel. Those monkeys are the greatest things. They jumped with their babies in their arm. They have a reputation of stealing cameras and purses if you are not aware. I was careful when taking pictures so not to lose my camera.

I am not sure where we slept. I cannot remember but I think we stayed downtown.
