Bigland transcriptions of Inscriptions to about 1775

Also - means this name is on the same stone as the previous one

Elizabeth greets our Recumbant Reverend gentleman Hi,
The dating of the transept is confused by the presence of the effigy, which is 13th century. However, Bigland shows the chancel and transepts were in use in 1699 when Mary Welsh was buried there.

Longhope in 1522 had as Steward Sir Christopher Baynham, and John Bird had the Vicarage. 55 are listed in the Military Survey dated 1522, 12 surnamed Dobbys, 5 are Wyntyll or Awyntyll.

In the Churchyard

Judith Judith Ven died 1710 This tablet high on the south wall, outside the Chancel, mourns the death of 'Judith 7th daughter of John Arrowsmith DD by Mary Percival his second wife who lived truly pious and died March ye 13 1710 the much lamented wife of George Ven MA Vicar aged 52'.
At first I thought the stone was for a baby, now I see that husband Rev George is proud of his wife's ancestry.
This monument is not listed by Bigland, and has been restored recently.

Surviver records

List Map The people of Longhope have made a list of the existing tombstones, and mapped the location.

Click the small map to see larger areas of the map and the list

07 - 08 Betty, wife of Edward Ballinger died 25 Oct 1785 aged 28, has position Number 1 on the map. The two stones are between the Tower and the porch.

08 The Constance tomb is on the east side of the porch, with these two older tombstones propped on the porch wall, to Martha wife of Richard Constance 24 July 1791 aged 65 and Richard died 16 Sep 1796.
James son of Richard and Martha died April 1785 ??
The tomb has inscriptions on all 4 sides.

07 - 08 The tombstone on the left is to Thomas Lodge died 7 Oct 1785 aged 52, and to Ann his daughter by Jane his wife died 7 Ap 1763 - rest is lost
The pair of stones - left appears to have been a portrait, and right may have been a coat of arms. Both images show the climate is hard on inscriptions.

07 - 08 Two more not yet identified tombs.

This dilemna led to my big project - identifying the first 300 gravestones, and recording the images. It begins at the Index page

Modern Monuments

07 - Probyn This tablet in the Sanctuary is for the Very Revd John Probyn of Manor House Longhope, Dean and Archdeacon of Llandaff, a son of Edmond Probyn Esquire with ancestors buried within Newland Church, Forest of Dean. He is buried in the family vault under the Chancel

In the early 1700s the patronage of All Saints' Church was in the hands of the Yate family who lived in The Manor House, and they are buried benearth the choir stalls on the north side of the chancel.
The Manor was then sold to Sir Edmund Robyn, a distinguished lawyer and inherited by John Probyn who, as a Clerk in Holy Orders, became Vicar of Abenhall, then of Longhope. We have memorials to him, his wife and grandson over the pulpit.
