P3000 Hand Held Pupillometer
My final year Industrial Project was undertaken in conjunction with THALES OPTRONICS based in Govan, Glasgow.

Pupillometry is the science of analysing pupil size.  It is an emergent technology that has found potential applications in a variety of daily situations but most notably in the diagnosis of a range of medical conditions from alcohol addiction to diabetes .

Traditionally pupillometers are bench mounted devices that require the use of a PC and specialist software to utilise basic optical physics in order to take digital pictures of the pupil and calculate it’s size. These principals are illustrated in the diagram opposite.
My project breif was to develop a hand held pupillometer for use within a clinical environment for aiding in the diagnosis  of relative afferent pupilliary defects and various neurological disorders.
Concept sketches were swiftly embodied in 3D using basic modelling techniques and taken out to potential product operatrors and patients for expert evaluation.  using this information, the concepts were then developed to incorperate those features seen as desirable and to eliminate those seen as threatening to the patient of impede operation by the clinician.

Simaltaneously, the internal optical system was developed in conjunction with in house optical engineers.  A new patented system was derrived that reduced the number of components by over 40% and permitted a very compact product envelope.

These concepts were then further developed using 3D CAD (SolidWorks) and rapid prototypes generated for further evaluation.

This process assisted in the development of procurement specifications, build sequences, assembly cell design and assembly jig design, all of which were a required outcome of the project
The resultant P3000 Hand Held Pupillometer is shown in use opposite.

The compact design transmits the information collected to a desktop PC for processing via InfraRed.

On board screen and control panel ensures operator can stay with patient throughout testing

Ergonomic design and work studies ensure simple,  intuitive operation.
