Chapter 46

Adam Cavett rounded the corner into the kitchen, keeping up his running commentary as he filmed using his Christmas present, a video camera. "And here is a sight you don't see often, the two oldest Cavett children talking instead of arguing."

Andrew and Abe stuck their tongues out at the camera. Andrew’s wife, Stacey, giggled.

"And they call me immature," stated Allen, running into the shot.

"Back up son."

"Real mature," commented Andrew.

"Yep," replied Allen and was rewarded with the big brother eye roll.

"And here is the one who keeps us in line, my beautiful wife."

"Adam, I look a fright," fussed Barbara, immediately reaching up to smooth her hair.

Adam chuckled, “say something for prosperity, honey.”

Pausing for a moment, she said, “Merry Christmas to future generations!”

“Perfect,” stated her husband.

“Andrew, you’re turn.”

“Okay,” he said, wrapping his arm around Stacy. “Like Mom said, Merry Christmas future generations! Funny she should put it that way, because the next generation of the Cavett Clan is celebrating its first Christmas as we speak. Next year it can participate more, because it will be out and about, so to speak.”

Abe laughed and Stacey poked her husband. Seconds ticked off, realization dawned that there was a baby on the way, and pandemonium broke out. Adam nearly dropped the camera. Barbara gasped, walking over to lay hand on Stacey’s stomach, she began to cry. Allen and Abe danced around like loons.

In the middle of the chaos, Abe's cell rang. Grabbing it from the counter where she had left it to recharge, she said, "Hello! Baby Central."

“Abe?”

Beaming, Abe said, “Merry Christmas!”

"Merry Christmas," chuckled Nick

Something in Abe’s voice caught everyone's attention. They turned to look at her.

Feeling their eyes, she said, "can you hang on for a second."

"Something wrong," asked her mother.

"No, but I do need to take this call. Y'all keep celebrating. I'm just going to step outside for a few minutes."

She headed out the back door, but was stopped by her mother.

"What," asked Abe, feeling defensive.

"It's cold out. Take your brother's sweatshirt."

"Thanks."

Waiting until her mother was inside, Abe said, "Nick, you still there?"

"Yeah. What was that about baby central?"

"Hang on." Abe pulled the sweatshirt over her head. "Okay. You remember my big brother Adam?"

"Yep. Hard to forget someone that's carried you around in nothing but a sheet."

"True," giggled Abe, walking through the backyard. "Nick, hang on again."

Before he could ask or protest, Abe moved the phone away from her ear. Holding it in her teeth by the antenna, she quickly climbed to her favorite thinking spot.

"I'm back."

"Where'd you go," asked Nick, sounding a little frustrated.

"I'm sorry. I couldn't climb and talk."

"Climb? Where the hell are you?"

"On my garage roof."

"What," exclaimed Nick.

“This has always been my spot. When I want privacy, I come here.”

"Be careful."

"I will. Now back to Baby Central. Andrew's wife, Stacey is going to have a baby. I'm going to be an aunt."

"Cool."

"Yeah. So, you having a good Christmas?"

"Pretty good. I miss you."

"I miss you too."

"How are things going with your mom," he asked.

"Since holding her hostage in a parking lot on the way home from the airport, things are going much better."

She went on to explain what had happened. Nick listened, which had not always been his strong suit in the past. With Abe, it was different. He wanted to know what was going on with her, wanted to share in her experiences.

As the conversation wound down, a ladder suddenly appeared against the side of the garage. Abe laughed and told Nick what was happening.

"Thanks Dad," she called out.

Her father’s voice drifted up to her. "Use it."

"Yes sir,” she said with a laugh. She turned her attention back to Nick. “Any cool presents?”

“I got some cool games and clothes and stuff. You?”

“Actually, at first I thought all I was getting was socks and a few little things. Which I would have been happy with, but it is usually more. Anyway, they surprised me, with $500.00 to spend on clothes.”

“Good surprise right?”

“Wonderful surprise,” she replied. “Mom said, they all figured I could use some more new clothes, but they didn’t know what size or style to get me. In the past, they’ve always just given me clothes, but this time they are giving me the money, so I can pick the clothes. It means they understand the changes and are accepting me as I am now.”

“Big step,” stated Nick.

“Huge step.”

“I’m glad Bella.”

“Nicky?”

“Yeah,” he said, loving the change in her voice.

“Thank you.”

“Why?”

“For helping me do this.”

“Just returning the favor Bella.”

“Miss you.”

“I miss you too. I guess I better let you get back in the house. Tell Adam congratulations.”

“I will. Talk to you soon.”

“Okay. See you in a few days. Have fun with the doctor.”

“Yeah right,” laughed Abe.

“Use the ladder.”

“Yes sir,” she now giggled. “Bye Nicky.”

“Bye Bella.”

She used the ladder, then carried it into the garage before heading for the house. Walking down into the family room, she found only her father.

“Where is everyone?”

“Andy and Al took a plate over to Mrs. Hibermyle for your mother.”

“How is she doing?”

“Since the hip replacement surgery, she’s doing much better. They are talkin’ about letting her come home in another week or two.”

“That’s good to hear. I miss seeing her next door.”

Abe took a seat on the couch and tried to watch TV. Adam watched as his only daughter’s foot bounced nervously. He waited for her to talk.

“Daddy, can I ask you something?”

“Sure.”

Turning to face him, she asked, “did you ever love anyone one but mama?"

He was taken aback by the question, but answered honestly. “There was one girl before your mama. Her name was Bonnie Sue McGentry. We went to high school together. Dated most of our senior year. I thought she was the one.”

“What happened?”

“You sure you don’t want to have this talk with your mama?”

“Daddy,” she chided.

“All right. She was staying here and I was going away to college. She was convinced I wouldn’t come back to her, so she broke up with me right after graduation and started dating another guy in our class.”

“That’s horrible.”

“It felt pretty horrible at the time, but in the end things worked out. Although, not the way she had planned.”

“What do you mean?”

Adam chuckled, “the guy she married, moved her to Seattle then took off on her. I came home and married your mama.”

“I bet you wished, you could of skipped Bonnie Sue and gone straight to mama.”

“No,” corrected her father. “Not dating her would have changed my life’s course and I might never have met your mama.”

“Still it would have saved you the broken heart.”

“But don’t you see Little Bit? Broken hearts are a part of life. You can’t feel love if you are always holding onto your heart.”

“I don’t now,” Abe responded, skeptically.

“Anna, your mama and I talked the other night when you got home. Don’t look so shook up. I’m not happy you two fought, but I think it was unavoidable and seemed to have cleared the air.”

“It did.”

“I’m glad. She mentioned something about there may be a boy.”

"Yes," replied Abe, hanging her head.

“I’m glad about that too Little Bit.”

“Don’t get your hopes up Daddy.”

“Don’t give up your hope daughter.”

“Meaning,” asked Abe.

“Meaning you deserve to be loved. It can’t happen as long as you close yourself off.”

“But what if he’s not the one?”

“He may not be and that’s okay.”

“But Daddy, I think I want him to be.”

“Then you have to give him a chance and give yourself a chance too.”

"I’m tryin' Daddy."

"I know you are. Just remember this Little Bit, you have to let go of your heart so someone else can hold it."

Chapter 47

Nick was confused. Abe had answered the door when he knocked. However, before he could say a word, she ran away. Now he stood in the doorway of the apartment wondering if the Pod people had taken his girlfriend and how he’d get her back.

Alarms went off in his head, when a guy walked in from where Abe had disappeared. Who was this guy and why the hell had Abe sent him out?

“Hey Nick. I’m Tim.”

“Michele’s fiancé.” Nick began to relax.

“That’s me. Come on in.”

“Thanks. Um…what’s wrong with Abe? Is she mad at me?”

Tim laughed. “No! Come with me and you’ll see.”

Nick dropped his bags by the door and followed, looking around as he went. Just inside the door on the right was a bedroom, then the short entrance hall opened into the living and dining room on the right. The kitchen was on the left.

Tim stopped outside another door, motioning him closer. It was another bedroom. Inside, Nick’s girlfriend was holding onto the hands of an amused girl and jumping up down.

“Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!”

“You’re welcome,” replied Chely, shaking her head at her best friend’s antics.

“I can’t believe you did it.” Abe abruptly stopped bouncing. “How’d ya do it?”

“I got your cell while you slept in yesterday and called him.”

“Sneaky.”

“Sometimes. Anyway, I invited him to come celebrate with us.”

“And he just agreed,” asked Abe.

“Yep,” replied Nick.

Spinning around, Abe made a dive for him. He surprised her by lifting her off the ground. She hugged him tightly around the neck as her legs wrapped around his waist.

“Hi Nick. I’m Michele. It’s nice to finally meet you.”

“Yeah, it’s about time,” he grinned, tightening his grip on Abe.

Abe winked at her best friend as she closed the door. After a moment, she asked, “Are you going to put me down?”

“No.”

“Come on Nicky. I’m too heavy f…”

“Shhh,” interrupted Nick, before brushing his lips against hers.

“Nick.”

He relented by taking a seat on the bed and leaving her in his lap. “Better?”

“Yes. I can’t believe you’re here!”

“So, we surprised you good?”

“Yes. How did your family take the news?”

Nick looked away.

“Nick?”

“They didn’t really care one way or the other. Well the kids pouted a little, but they were surprised I was home anyway. Guess mom forgot to tell them I was coming.”

“Oh Nick, I’m sorry.”

“Its okay.”

“No it’s not, but I don’t know how to fix it.”

“You can’t, but thanks for wanting too. No more talk about them. Did you see the doctor?”

“Yes and he pronounced me healthy. Now mom has to finally give up on force feeding me,” she said, making a goofy face.

“Good.” He placed a kiss on the tip of her nose.

“Thanks for coming.”

“You don’t have to thank me. I want to be here. I’m glad Michele called.”

“Me too. My bestest friend rocks,” declared Abe, her smile bright.

“Yes she does.”

“You know you rock too.”

“Me,” he asked, wrinkling up his nose.

“Yes. You rock hard!”

Nick chuckled, but soon quieted. It surprised him how strong his feelings were for this girl sitting in his lap. He took in her face. Not a drop of make-up and still her skin looked like porcelain. Brushing her bangs away, it felt like he was of being pulled into her blue-green eyes. His eyes drifted to her mouth. It was delicate and the color of maraschino cherries, except to him they were sweeter than any fruit he’d ever tasted. That was it, he realized. His Bella was sweet and kind and everything good he’d searched for but never found.

His stomach flip-flopped. His heart raced as his chest tightened. A huge lump in his throat made it hard to swallow. With a dry mouth and sweaty palms he came to the realization that this was love. And he was freaking out.

Abe watched Nick. Something was going on, though she didn’t know what. They hadn’t moved, but she felt a wall coming up. His smile faded. She could tell he was suddenly a million miles away. She didn’t know why, but it scared her.

“Nick?”

“Huh?”

“You okay?”

“Yeah…Yeah.”

A knock prevented Abe from questioning him further.

“Hey guys? We’re heading to the store for party supplies, we’ll be back in thirty minutes,” said Chely.

Nick cleared his throat. “Um…okay if we go with you?”

Chely and Abe exchanged a look. What the heck? That was one surprise they hadn’t counted on.

********

No one had recognized Nick on the shopping trip. While this was a good thing, Abe was still worried. Nick had remained quiet while they were out. Currently he was helping empty the bags of food. Her attempts to engage him were rebuffed. Giving up, she retreated into herself too.

Michele watched the couple throughout dinner. At some point during the meal, Tim picked up the change in everyone’s mood. He took his cue from Michele and kept the conversation light. A movie diverted their attention for a good portion of the evening.

Pulling the DVD out of the machine, Michele said, “Its bedtime for me.”

“Me too,” agreed Tim.

“Can I get a pillow,” asked Nick.

Shooting a look at him, Abe asked, “why?”

He refused to look at her. “I'm ready to get some sleep.”

“And,” she pressed.

“I can cover up with this, so I just need a pillow.” He pulled the throw off the back of the couch.

“Fine.”

Abe stormed in her bedroom, returning with a pillow, which she promptly dropped on his head.

“Thanks,” he said quietly.

Turning to the other two people in the room, Abe said, “night.”

“Night,” replied Tim.

Abe locked eyes with her best friend. Without another word, she turned on her heels and slammed the door on her way into the bedroom. Michele looked down at Nick, who was pretending to be asleep. Sighing, she led Tim into their bedroom.

Chapter 48

Nick tossed and turned on the couch for a good hour, before heading for the bathroom on Abe’s end of the apartment. He didn’t realize it connected directly to her room by way of a walk-through closet, until he turned on the light and walked in. He glanced through the open closet doors, but could only make out her shape in the bed.

“Sorry about the light.”

“Fine.”

“Fine,” he shot back.

Seconds passed.

“Stop it.”

“Stop what?”

“Staring.”

“How do you know I’m staring,” she asked.

“I can feel it.”

“So?”

“So, I can’t pee with ya staring at me.”

She growled.

“Fine,” he exclaimed, reaching behind him and slamming the door shut.

Second’s later he heard the door on the other end of the closet slam shut.

“Fine,” retorted Abe from the other side of the two closed doors.

Nick didn’t say another word, only slammed the door leading the living room upon leaving the bathroom. Michele walked past him without a word and slipped inside Abe’s bedroom.

“Get out Nick,” demanded Abe.

“Wrong person. What the hell is going on?”

Abe flipped onto her back. “I don’t know.”

Michele took a seat on the bed. “You don’t?”

“No! One minute everything was fine, the next he shutdown. I saw it happen, but don’t know what caused it.”

“Then you need to talk to him.”

“Me? I’m not the one being a jerk.”

“No, but…”

“No buts, the jerk can be the one to talk first,” stated Abe, flipping away from her best friend.

Michele curbed her urge to throttle Abe. Instead, she walked out into the living room.

“Nick, come with me.”

“Where?”

“Shut up and follow me,” ordered Michele, taking his hand and pulling him into Abe’s bedroom.

Flipping the light on, she started rummaging through Abe’s vanity.

“What are you doing?”

“I’m looking for two pairs of ear plugs. Ah ha! Found’em. I’m going back to bed. Y’all work this out, because I’m not having you ruin the party tomorrow night. And I’ll be damned if the two of you will start the new year mad at each other. Yell, cry, slam things, do whatever it takes to work this out, but work it out. Goodnight.”

The couple watched her close the door on her way out. Turning his head to see Abe glaring at him, Nick folded his arms across his chest and glared back.

“Why did you lie,” asked Abe, her tone sharp.

“What,” exclaimed Nick.

“You heard me. Why did you lie?”

“What are you talking about?”

Dropping her eyes to the comforter, she picked at imaginary lint. “You said you wanted to be here.”

“Yeah.”

“That was a lie.”

“No it wasn’t. Do ya not want me here?”

“I told you I did,” she said, her bottom lip jutting out.

“And I told you I wanted to be here.”

“Then what the hell is your problem,” she asked.

“My problem? I don’t know what you’re talkin’ about.”

“Fine,” she replied. “Turn off the light on your way out.”

“Fine,” he said quietly.

His head hung down, he turned the light off and left the room. Abe felt the tears burning her eyes. She hated crying and she hated what was happening between them. Throwing the covers off, she bounded out to the darkened living room. Though the room was dark, she could tell he was lying on the couch.

“Are you breaking up with me,” she blurted out.

“No!”

“Then tell me what I did.”

“Nothing.”

“Bullshit! You’ve been ignoring me all night.”

“Have not,” he shot back defensively. He heard a sniffle. “Hey, are you crying?”

“No,” she sniffled again.

“Why are you crying,” he asked, sitting up finally.

“I told you I’m not! I’m fine.”

Reaching for her hand, he pulled her down to sit by him.

“Stop being nice,” she ordered.

“No,” he said, gently. “Why are you so upset?”

“Gee, I don’t know Nick! I’m snuggling with this guy who says he’s my boyfriend and suddenly he wants to go shopping with my friends. Then he doesn’t talk to me for the rest the night.”

“I talked to you.”

“Only when you had to. Whatever I did, I’m sorry. I’ll fix it,” she said, trying to swallow around the lump in the throat. “I know I suck at this couple thing. Just give me a chance and I’ll get it right.”

Nick felt sick. She sounded so sad and he’d caused it.

“Bella listen to me. You didn’t do anything wrong. It’s me,” he explained, squeezing her hand.

“What’s you?”

“This whole problem.”

“Nick, please tell me what’s going on.”

“I just realized something, is all.”

Getting frustrated, Abe said, “For the love of God! Would you just tell me?”

“Fine! I love you!”

Nick’s heart stopped beating for the few seconds it took Abe to react, and then it started hammering in his chest when she didn’t react the way he expected. She reached for the light next to the couch and flipped it on.

Focusing back on Nick, she asked, “What did you say?”

Swallowing hard, he said, “I love you.”

“I see,” she said, getting up and heading for her bedroom.

Nick stared after her for a moment in disbelief, but soon recovered and followed her.

“Bella?”

“Go away.”

“What the fuck! I tell you I love you and you tell me to go away?” He waited for a response that wasn’t coming. “Abe talk to me damn it!”

“I’m sorry.”

“Sorry,” he exploded, fighting the urge to put his fist through the wall.

“Yes,” she said in a small voice. “I’m sorry that figuring out you love me is a bad thing.”

“What the fuck are you talking about? I’m going to loose my fuckin’ mind if you don’t talk to me.”

“You realized you loved me and you stopped talking to me. I think it is pretty fucking clear that you don’t want to love me. I’m sorry it happened. You go with everyone tomorrow and have a good time. I’ll call Roger and resign.”

“Wait,” he pleaded. She was so calm and it was scaring the shit out him. “I didn’t say it was bad.”

“Well ya didn’t say it was a good either,” she retorted. “It’s okay. I’m use to it.”

“Use to what?”

“Being alone. It was nice while it lasted. Thanks for being my first boyfriend.”

“I’m still your fuckin’ boyfriend! I won’t let you break up with me. I freaked. Okay that was bad, but it was only because this was something new,” he explained.

“You’ve been in love before.”

“Not like this. You’re different and you make me different.”

“So, I’m making you change,” she replied, getting defensive.

“No,” he replied. Closing the distance between them, he cupped her face and lightly kissed her. “Will you shut up until I can get this out? You keep interrupting and I can’t get it out.”

Sighing, she sat down on the bed. He dropped to his knees in front of her, folding her hands in his.

“I never saw you comin’. I mean you were the biggest pain in my ass when we first met. Don’t give me that look, you know it’s true. I was the biggest pain in your ass too. Then one day, you weren’t such a pain anymore. I figured out that you were helping me. I liked how things were and how we were becoming friends. Then you and that damn Halloween outfit. Baby, you were so sexy and guys were checking you out. I didn’t like it, because you were my Abe. Things started changing then. I loved Thanksgiving. Abe, nobody ever gave a damn where I was on holidays. You did. Not because you had to or you wanted something.”

“Nick, I work for you…”

“I said shut up until I’m done. After all these years, I can tell the difference. You did that for me. I was starting to fall for you then. Hell probably before then, but today all of that hit me like a ton of bricks while we were sitting here. It overwhelmed me and I was trying to get use to the idea. Then I fuck it all up and tell you like I did. I don’t blame you for being pissed.”

“I’m interrupting now. I’m not pissed. It hurt to be shut out. I thought you were upset, because you didn’t want to love me.”

“No. It was just me being a fuck up.”

“Stop talking that way about the man I love.”

Nick’s eyes locked on her’s. “What?”

“I love you, Nick, but I’m scared too.”

“Why?”

“Because I don’t know how to do all of this. I’ve never been in love. I’ve never had anyone tell me they love me. Well, family doesn’t count. I’m scared I’m going to screw it up and run you off. Daddy and I talked the other day. He said, I had to let go of my heart before someone could catch it. Nick, I’m tryin’ to let go of my heart.”

“I’ve got it Bella.”

“I’ve got yours too.”

Nick wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her closer. She loved him. She’d said it. His heart felt like it would burst.

“How about we stop worrying about it and start enjoying it,” he suggested.

“Okay,” she said, around a yawn.

“I’ll let you get some sleep,” he said, standing to leave.

Catching his hand, Abe whispered, “come to bed Nicky.”

She scooted over and he took his place beside her. They snuggled down in the covers.

“Nick,” she whispered after a moment.

“What?”

”Do you think we will always do things the hard way?”

He started to chuckle. “Probably.”

“Well one thing's for sure,” she said.

”What’s that?”

”I would rather fight with you any day Nicky, than not have you in my life.”

“Me too Bella.”
