Chapter 64

Nick watched his girlfriend talk on her cell phone. They were sitting on the couch in the main room of their suite. Her legs were stretch across his lap. She swatted at his hand when he tickled her foot, never missing a beat in her conversation with her best friend.

“Call your parents.”

”Did I tell you we met the Osbornes?”

”Yes. Call your parents,” replied Michele.

“Did I tell you Nick got the wedding invitation?”

Nick leaned closer, “Thanks for inviting me.”

“She says your welcome,” answered Abe, before turning her attention back to her best friend. “He’s coming.”

”Good. Now call your parents.”

“So I’m going to dinner with AJ tonight.”

“That’s nice. You are taking Nick home with you in two days. Now damn it ET, phone home!”

“Fine! I’ll call my parents,” she exclaimed, but she was laughing too.

“Finally! I will talk to you later.”

”Okay. Bye.”

Abe hung up and looked at her boyfriend. Brushing hair out of his eyes, she sighed. Catching her hand, he began playing with her fingers.

“I’ll be right here.”

“Good. Here goes nothing,” replied Abe, placing the call.

“Hello.”

”Hey little brother.”

“You still coming home?”

“Yes,” she said, drawing out the word.

“Ha! I win!”

“You win?”

“Andy said you would back out of your visit. I bet him you wouldn’t.”

“Thanks for the support.” Her sarcasm ringing loud and clear through the phone.

“Anytime. So what’d you want?”

“I need to let mom and dad know something.”

”Oh, and you can’t tell me?”

”Fine. I’m bringing someone home with me.”

”Nick?”

She sat up straighter. “Why’d you ask if it was him?”

”Thought so.”

”Answer me,” she demanded.

“Hell Anna, I knew you two were going to fall in Luuuuve,” he teased.

“Bite me. Not another word,” she warned. They were silent for a moment. “When did you figure this out?”

Silence.

“Allen?”

Silence.

“Allen Bennet Cavet!”

Silence.

Abe’s face went red. Nick took the cell. “Allen. This is Nick.”

”Hey man. How’s it goin’?”

“Good. How about you?”

“Good. So you’re coming for a visit.”

“Yep.”

“Give me that phone,” ordered Abe.

“Hang on,” said Nick.

Abe lunged for the phone, but Nick pulled it back out of reach and gave her a kiss. “Chill.”

Abe grabbed the phone. “Allen!”

Silence.

“You little shit!”

“You told me not another word,” he chuckled. “Wow you’ve gotten soft. It used to take way more to piss you off.”

Abe growled.

“Okay. I knew something was up on the plane. You only fight like that with family.”

Silence.

“Anna don’t freak. I’m happy for you. I like Nick.”

”I know you do,” she relented. “So Mom or Dad around?”

“Mom’s here. Hang on.”

“Hey Allen?”

”Yeah?”

”Don’t tell them whose coming. Kay?”

“Sure.”

“Thanks.”

Nick caressed her cheek. She gave him a small smile.

“Anna?”

“Hi Mom.”

”You’re not coming.”

”Mother I’m still coming. I swear y’all are going to drive me crazy!”

“Sorry. Reflex.”

“I guess,” grumbled Abe. “I emailed you my flight information.”

”I got it.”

The conversation lulled.

“Anna, did you need to something?”

”Huh? Why?”

”You called,” said her mother, exasperation creeping into her voice.”

Abe’s eyes lifted to Nick’s face. “Mom, I’m bringing someone home with me.”

”You are?”

Abe could hear the interest in her mother’s voice immediately. “Yes.”

”Who?”

”Someone I’ve been seeing and that’s all I’m saying.”

”Are you kidding?”

”No. You can get mad and yell and everything, but you will just have to wait.”

”Then why did you tell me at all.”

”Because I didn’t want to spring a houseguest on you.”

“Oh. But…”

”Mom.”

Sighing, Barbara said, “All right. May I ask you a question or two?”

”What,” Abe asked warily.

“Is this the boy you mentioned at Christmas?”

”Yes.”

”Are you in love?”

Smiling at Nick, Abe said, “Yeah Mama, I am.”

“In that case, I look forward to meeting him. May I tell your father?”

”Of course! But don’t tell Adam or Allen.”

“Okay.”

“Thanks Mama. I gotta go.”

”All right. Love you Little Bit.”

“I love you too Mama.”

Ending the call, Abe laid her cell phone on the coffee table. She allowed Nick to pull her onto his lap. Kissing her temple, he tightened his hold on her.

“See that wasn’t so bad.”

”No it wasn’t, because you were here. You sure you’re ready to meet my parents?”

”Yes. No more hiding.”

”No more hiding,” she agreed, giving him a kiss. “Just think. After tomorrow, we won’t have to hide anymore.”

“I know,” he said, hugging her as the excitement took hold. “I can’t wait.”

“It’s kinda scary. I mean it feels like we’ve been in this safe little cocoon.”

“Are you saying you want to continue to hide?”

“Nope. I think it’s time we spread our wings.”

“Oh you do?”

”Yep.”

“What time is it?”

”Changing subjects,” she laughed as she checked her watch. “11:25.”

“When do we leave for the show?”

“2:45.”

“Great!”

Slipping his arm under her knees and tightening his grip, Nick stood up.

Abe squealed, “Nick! What on earth are you doing?”

“We’ve got time for me to make love to my woman.”

“That so. What happened to Bella?”

”Baby you are always Bella, but you’re also my woman. Got it?”

“Got it.”

Chapter 65

“You do realize it is a little late for dinner,” stated Abe, entering AJ’s room.

“Yes, but we’re going to do it anyway.”

“Whatever you say.”

“Tomorrow we are having the party for everyone. This is our last chance to spend some time together.”

“Where are we going?”

“Nowhere,” replied AJ. “Dinner is coming to us.”

“Did you make Marcus go out?”

“No. I ordered from downstairs and that should be them,” he replied, answering the door.

AJ pushed the cart of food out onto his balcony, after tipping the waiter and showing him out. Abe turned on the stereo to a station playing jazz and turned it up just enough for the music to float in the background. AJ helped her into a chair.

“What a gentleman,” she teased.

“Hey, I am capable of being a gentleman.”

“I know. It looks good on you. What are we having for dinner sir?

“Viola!” he said and with a flourish lifted the lids off their plates.

“Cheeseburgers and fries, perfect!”

“Thank you. Thank you.”

“After you sleep for a week, what are you going to do with your time off?”

AJ answered around a mouth full of food. “Golf.”

“One of the most frustrating games in the world.”

“Ain’t it the truth, but it keeps me out of trouble.”

“I’d stay out of trouble so I wouldn’t have to golf,” chuckled Abe.

“Did you call home and let them know you’re bringing your boyfriend home?”

“Why is everyone so concerned about this issue?”

“Oh I don’t know. Maybe because you’ve put it off like forever. Could that be the reason?”

“Bite me.”

“You know I will. Now answer me,” he ordered.

“Yes, I talked to my mom today.”

“Did she have any comment about Nick?”

“I didn’t tell her who,” mumbled Abe.

“Excuse me?”

Responding louder, she said, “I didn’t tell her who. Don’t give me that look. It is for the best. I don’t want Andy finding out and telling them anything that might color their first impression of Nick.”

“I guess that makes sense.”

Chewing thoughtfully, Abe said, “I can’t believe this is almost over.”

“Yeah, it’s been a long tour. You guys have done a good job. I don’t think anyone else has figured it out.”

“Good. It’s not just that AJ. I’m going miss seeing you everyday.”

“That’s why God invented cell phones and frequent flyer miles. You can visit anytime.”

“You have a standing invitation, too. As a matter of fact, if you can tear yourself away from the fairways, you could always come help move me into my new place.”

“That’s right. After your “meet the parents” moment, you have to head down to your place and pack up. Have you picked out a place to live,” asked AJ.

“There are a couple of places. There is also the option of moving to a one bedroom in the same complex.”

“Are you going to stay in Orlando proper?”

“I think so.”

“I take it you and Nick haven’t discussed this.”

“No, we haven’t.”

“Figures. You know, for someone so organized you sure do fly by the seat of your pants when it comes to this relationship.”

“In case you haven’t noticed, I’m involved with a fly by the seat of my pants kind of guy. Or as he puts it, go with the flow kind of guy.”

Laughing, AJ said, “Hell yes, I’ve notice. We’re a lot alike in that respect.”

“Yes you are. It’s one of the things I love about both of you.”

A knocked interrupted.

“You’re going to love me even more in a minute.”

AJ disappeared inside, only to return shortly carrying a large bowl. Abe’s eyes became huge when she saw what was inside.

“Oh my, AJ. There’s what? 7 or 8 scoops,” she asked, trying to count.

“Ten,” corrected AJ. “And brownies, and cookies, and fudge syrup, and whip cream with some cherries on top.”

“I feel like we should call in some folks to help us eat it.”

“I’m only sharing with you,” replied AJ, handing her a spoon.

They concentrated for a few moments on putting a dent in the dessert.

“Bella…don’t give me that look. I’m being serious here.”

“I’m sorry, please continue.”

“Thank you. Bella, I’m glad you came on this tour. You’ve blossomed into this beautiful woman and it’s pretty damn cool. But more importantly, you were always a good person. I’ll miss seeing you everyday, too. Nick is damn lucky to have you and I can tell you one thing for sure, that boy is in love with you. You ever need me, I’m there.” His voice getting rough with emotion.

“Same goes for you Mister,” replied Abe, tears glistening in her eyes.

“All right enough of this mushy shit! The ice cream’s melting.”

********

Snuggling in behind Nick, Abe wrapped an arm around him.

“Did you have a good time,” asked Nick.

“Yes. What did you do?”

“Pat and me watched some TV. Where did you guys go?”

“No place. He ordered room service and we ate on the balcony of his suite.”

“So you had cheeseburgers and fries,” he stated.

“Exactly,” laughed Abe. “And, we had this big Sunday for dessert. I think I’m very close to a sugar coma.”

“Ah, I want some.”

“Some what?”

Turning to face her, Nick whispered, “Sugar.”

His reply was her lips brushing against his.

“Mmm, good.”

“Yep. How long have you been in bed?”

“Awhile. I’ve been laying here thinking.”

“About?”

“You having to move.”

“And?”

“What if you got another roommate?”

“I don’t know Nick. I’ve only had Michele as a roommate. I don’t know anyone else I could live with.” “You lived with me,” he stated.

“Yes, I’ve lived with you, but…” she trailed off. “Are you saying what I think you’re saying?”

“Yeah. Why don’t you move in with me, down in Marathon? You know I’ve got my own place on the property now. So there’s room for your stuff. I love you baby. We’ve been together almost everyday for over a year now.”

“But what about a job?”

Nick interrupted, “I will still need an assistant when the tours done.”

“To help you do what? You guys are taking a long break.”

“I know, but you know Mom is pushing for me to go out with Aaron. Hell Bella, you can be my manager.”

“Oh no, I couldn’t.”

“You don’t want to be my manager,” he asked, the hurt cutting through the darkness.

“It’s not a matter of what I want, but what’s best for you. It is too big a leap to go from personal assistant to manager. I don’t have the experience or connections you need in a manager.”

“I guess you’re right.”

“I am about this.”

“I don’t want to be separated from you when we leave you parents,” he admitted.

“That’s just it Nick. My parents would freak.”

“Bella, they’d get over it.”

“I don’t know.”

“I do. Bella, think about it. What do you want? Forget everyone else.” He knew he was pushing, but he need the answer. He didn’t think he would make it without her. “What do you want?”

“I want you,” she quietly answered.

“So?”

“You are so going to be there when I tell them.”

”Just like everything. We do it together,” he laughed, feeling all the tension leave his body as his heart soared.

”Boy, Blondie, I must really love you,” she teased.

Tightening his hold on her and pressing a kiss against her forehead. “And I really love you too, Bella.”

Chapter 66

Light filtered through the curtains. Abe snuggled up with a pillow, her hair spread out behind her. Nick watched sleep as he readied for a radio interview with the rest of the guys. He wanted to crawl back in bed with her, but knew he couldn’t get out of this interview. Walking to the credenza, he picked up the little figurine he had been carrying with him since she gave it to him.

“I can’t believe you are still carrying it,” her sleep deepened voice said.

“It’s small and fits in my pocket perfectly. Besides, it always reminds me of you.” He dropped a kiss onto her bare shoulder. “By the way, good morning.”

She gave a lazy smile.

“I wish I didn’t have to leave.”

“I wish you didn’t have to either.”

“Will you be here when I get back?”

She shook her head as she sat up in bed. “Probably not. You have to go straight into your meeting with Roger and the accountant.”

“I don’t want to sit through another long ass meeting.”

“Hey, this long ass meeting means after the show tonight you are a free man. If you weren’t meeting this afternoon, you would have to fly either back here to New York or out to LA to finish closing out everything for the tour. This way you have everything done. Besides, I’m going to do some shopping for tonight.”

Kissing her fully, Nick asked, “oooh, what are you getting for tonight?”

“Just some stuff. Since, it is our last night before we head to my parents. Otherwise, known as the sex free zone.”

He groaned, “Don’t remind me.”

“I have every intention of wearing you out tonight.”

“You do?”

“Most certainly.”

“Damn, I think I’ll just skip the radio station visit,” he said, attempting to crawl into bed.

“No. No. No.” Getting out of bed, she said, “You will just have to wait until tonight.”

“Bella, you’re killing me here,” he whined, his eyes raking over her body, before she wrapped her arms around him and pulled him close.

“Aw, baby its called anticipation.” Her hands dropped down to grab his ass, while she nibbled on his neck.

“Fuck me,” he moaned

“I definitely plan to tonight. Now go.” Without another word, she turned and went into the bathroom. Nick followed. He stared at the closed door then banged his head against it. “I am so going to you get you for this.”

“Certainly hope so,” she replied.

With a growl, he left for the stupid interview.

********

She found the closest mall and went to Victoria’s Secret, where she found a beautiful nightgown for the evening. It was white silk with lace detailing. Sequins and beading decorated the delicate bodice. A side slit revealed most of her leg. She bought the sheer full-length robe that was paired with it on a mannequin in the store. She even splurged on satin slippers with feathers and three-inch heels.

She also located a store with chocolate-covered strawberries and truffles. Her last stop was to purchase roses and candles. On her way back to the hotel, she checked with the concierge to make sure the coast was clear. After confirming he had left for the venue, she called Nick and got his voicemail.

“Hey Nicky. It’s me. I’m running late. I will be at the arena as soon as I get things fixed at the hotel. You did a great job at the radio station. I hope the meeting wasn’t too long ass,” she chuckled. “Do we have to stay at the party for very long? I just want to get back to our room and have some quality time with my man. Don’t laugh at me. If I’m your woman then you’re my man. Love you baby. See you soon. Bye.”

********

The accountant been droning on and on for over two hours. Nick had tuned him out a long time ago. He figured if there were some issue, Kevin or Brian blowing a gasket would alert him. He was doing something far more important…daydreaming.

Abe was moving in with him. It had taken him awhile to get up the courage to ask her. He had been thinking about it, since she told him about Michele and Tim buying a house.

He could see her in the kitchen standing, on the boat dock. He could picture her in his bed. He could see her everywhere. His only concern was his family. He had some time, because his mom was on the road with Aaron. He knew his dad would like her. He figured everyone would, except maybe his mother, but she’d have to deal with it.

“You may want to pay attention,” whispered AJ, bringing him back to the present.

Nick sat up straighter. “What are we talking about?”

“Same shit, but Kevin is about to kick your ass.”

Nick glanced over at Kevin, who was glowering at him. He rolled his eyes, but gave the accountant his attention.

Howie had flipped ahead in the report. “Why is Abe getting two checks?”

“Okay. Um…I guess we can jump ahead,” replied the accountant, frazzled at having his presentation being interrupted.

“Abe is getting an extra check,” asked Brian, flipping through the pages.

The accountant said, “Yes. We always print a separate check for bonuses.”

“What bonus,” asked Brian, becoming agitated. “Kevin did you know about a bonus?”

”No. I didn’t.”

Roger interrupted “It’s really no big deal guys.”

Kevin’s anger was barely contained. “Then why don’t you explain it to us?”

Roger gave Nick a wary glance. Clearing his throat he said, “We were having such difficulty keeping an assistant for Nick.”

“So Abe negotiated this with you,” asked Brian.

“No. The only thing she negotiated was Nick not being able to fire her. I was the one who came up with the bonus. I ran it by Jeff and he signed off on it. She was actually shocked when I told her about it.”

”How long has she known,” asked Howie.

“Since day one.

“Let me get this straight,” interrupted AJ. “Abe just had to last through the tour?”

“Yes and…well…get Nick in line. Sorry, Nick, but that was her job,” he apologized, shifting uncomfortably in his seat and not meeting anyone’s stare.

“And she couldn’t hook up with anyone,” stated AJ.

“AJ,” scolded Howie.

“It’s all right, Howie,” replied Roger. “No, Abe couldn’t hook up with anyone.”

“So she was being nice to all of us to get this bonus.”

”I don’t think Abe is like that,” said Howie.

“I don’t either,” agreed Roger. “She was to do her job.”

“Which she did,” stated Kevin.

“What,” exclaimed AJ.

Brian stepped in. “Calm down AJ. Kevin’s right. Her job was to get Nick to do his job.”

“The best money ever spent,” said the accountant, with a chuckle.

The room went deadly silent. He looked up from his copy of the report and was met with five angry glares. This time his chuckle was tinged with nervousness.

“Was that out loud?”

“It sure the hell was you little fuck,” yelled AJ. “For your information dick-wad, Abe…”

Nick finally spoke, “AJ, don’t.”

AJ’s head whipped around. “What?”

“They’re right. She earned it.”

“But…”

“I said let it go AJ.”

“What the fuck ever,” said AJ slumping in his seat.

Roger said, “I take full responsibility, but stand behind not only what I did, but why I did it.”

“Let’s hear it,” demanded Kevin.

“Telling you about the bonus would have pretty much guaranteed she wouldn’t last, Kevin.”

”You’re right,” agreed Kevin. “Well, let’s get back to it. We’ve got a show tonight.”

The accountant quickly finished up the report and beat a hasty retreat.

“Can we go,” asked Nick.

“Yes,” said Roger.

“I’m heading on over to the arena.”

“Anxious to get this show over Nicky,” asked Howie.

“Get Pat and Abe,” said Roger.

Without another word, Nick was out of the conference room and on his way to collect Pat.

“I’m ready to head out,” stated Nick, when he found Pat with the other bodyguards.

“We’re all going back to the hotel, so wait for everyone,” said Marcus.

“I’m going on over to the arena.”

”What about Abe,” asked Pat.

“Shopping.”

Nick’s response was monotone. Pat dropped it and not another word was spoken. Not even when they arrived backstage.

********

“Damn! It’s cold,” grumbled Nick. “Don’t you think it’s cold?

Looking up from his newspaper, Pat said, “Not really. Are you sick?”

“I don’t think so.”

“My jacket’s over there if you need it.”

“Thanks man,” replied Nick, getting the jacket and putting it on. “I’ll be back in a few.”

“Where ya goin’?”

“No place. I’m just going to wander around down here.”

“Are you okay,” asked his bodyguard, concern written all over his face.

“Yeah man. Just need to do some thinking.”

“All right then. Don’t wander anywhere you’re not suppose to without me.”

Even with the jacket on, he still couldn’t get warm as he wandered around the bowels of the arena. He didn’t want to talk to anyone. He wanted to be numb. Fifteen thousand dollars to make it to the end of the tour, that statement kept playing over and over in his mind. He loved her. He had trusted her. Trusted her like no one ever in his life. Fifteen thousand dollars was all it took for her to betray him. He knew he should be mad. Hell, he should have been tearing the fuckin’ conference room apart in a fit of rage, but he couldn’t.

At first he thought it was a mistake like the others, then he thought it was a joke, but when reality set in something snapped. It as something more than his heart breaking, it was as if his soul had been ripped out of him and now he couldn’t get warm.

He looked around. Nothing seemed real. It was like sleep walking, but he was wide awake. He could feel the pain skittered around the recess of his mind. He pushed it way. No, he would wouldn’t fall apart. Instead, he made two promises to himself. By the end of the night, he would be numb…and Abe would be gone.
