Officer Mason was shot to death by a man whom she had previously arrested
for carrying a concealed weapon a year earlier. Officer Mason was off duty
and servicing her personal vehicle at a gas station when the suspect recognized
her and began to argue with her. During the argument the suspect pulled out
a gun and fired one shot. The bullet entered Officer Mason's side and pierced
her heart. She died en route to a local hospital. The suspect fled the scene
but was identified and arrested early the next morning.
Officer Mason had been with the agency for two years. |

Officer King was killed when her cruiser struck a light pole while she was
responding to an emergency assistance call. The concrete light pole fell
on top of the cruiser, trapping Officer King inside. Emergency crews were
able to extricate her and she was flown to a local hospital, where she was
pronounced dead. Officer King was a member of the same unit as Officer George
DeSalvia, murdered three months earlier while on duty. Officer King had been
in law enforcement for four years and had been with the Orlando Police Department
for two years. She is survived by her parents, sister, and three brothers.

Deputy Payne was killed after she was struck by a vehicle while she was
investigating an accident. Deputy Payne and another officer had responded
to a business after the sheriff's department received a 911 call about a
possible shooting. Because there was no shoulder on the road, both officers
parked in the north-bound lane of the two lane road. While standing in the
south-bound lane, both officers were struck from behind by another drive.
They were transported by ambulance to a local hospital where Deputy Payne
was pronounced dead. The second officer was admitted in critical condition.
No charges were filed against the driver of the vehicle. Deputy Payne had
been with the agency for three years and is survived by her mother and
grandmother. |
