Officer Noreen Allison
VARGAS
California Highway Patrol Officer,
Sacramento, California, USA
Officer Vargas was killed on November 8th 1996. She was conducting follow
up enquiries in the West Covina area, using her private vehicle, when it
was struck by the rear tyres of a tractor trailer after it had shed its axle.
The tyres crushed the roof of her vehicle and she died instantly. The first
female CHP officer to die on duty, Noreen Vargas was based at the Baldwin
Park CHP station. She was a very well known and popular officer who had served
the Patrol for 7 years. She is survived by her 14 year old daughter. |

Officer Sherry Goodman
Shelby County Sheriffs Office, Tennessee,
USA
Officer Sherry Goodman was killed on
July 26th 1996. She was working a single officer vehicle and made a traffic
stop at 2.18am. Having established that the driver had outstanding warrants,
she took him into custody. She secured him in the rear of her vehicle, at
which time her backup car was diverted to another call. She transported the
prisoner herself. During the journey, the prisoner shot her in the head from
behind. Officer Goodman had served for 2 years and is survived by her husband
and two teenage children. |

Detective Sue Hill

Detective Hill was killed on July 18th
1996. She was a passenger on flight TWA800 which crashed shortly after takeoff
from JFK International Airport, New York. Detective Hill had served for 20
years and at the time of her death was engaged on duties with the Homicide
division of Portland PD. |

Senior Constable Jane
Kennaugh
Western Australian Police Service,
Australia
Senior Constable Kennaugh was killed
on July 1st 1996. Her police vehicle was involved in a collision and she
sustained fatal injuries. A member of the force since 1986, she is the first
female officer to have been killed on duty. She was 32 years old and is survived
by her husband and two sons one aged 5 years and the other only 17 months
old. |

Officer Pauline Harness
Philadelphia Police Department, Philadelphia,
USA
Officer Harness was killed on June 18th
1996. She was on patrol at Philadelphia International Airport and investigating
a suspicious noise in a building. She was descending a metal staircase when
she fell from it, fracturing her skull. Pauline Harness had served for 8
years and is survived by her husband and two young children. |

Inspector Vanessa Carroll
West Midlands Police, Solihull,
England.
Inspector Carroll was killed on 28th
April 1996. She was on secondment to Bosnia, where she and other officers
were helping restore normal policing to the region. Her vehicle swerved to
avoid another on her side of the road and she was killed when thrown onto
the roadway. |

Deputy Stacia Suzanne

Deputy Alyea was killed on 18th April
1996. She was involved in a vehicle pursuit of a drunk driver when her vehicle
was involved in a traffic accident. She is survived by her husband Cpt Dennis
Alyea of the same department, and their three children. |

Trooper Sandra Marie

Trooper Wagner was killed on April 5th
1996. Her patrol vehicle was struck by a tractor trailer as she was on patrol
in Sussex County. Trooper Wagner was stationed with 5 Troop in
Bridgeville. |

Constable Parrish was killed on March
13th 1996. A 29 year old, she had served for 9 years in Winchester and at
the time of her death was a passenger in a patrol car responding to an emergency
call. The vehicle swerved to avoid an object in the road, went out of control,
and struck a wall. |

Officer Lauritha Vaird
Philadelphia Police Department,
Pennsylvania,USA
Officer Vaird was killed on January 2nd
1996, becoming the year's first line of duty death. She was shot dead as
she entered a bank in response to an opening time silent alarm. Instead of
the usual false alarm at handover time, she was confronted by an armed raider.
A nine year veteran, she leaves two young children. |
