A Guide A Guide by Hollie by Hollie Most likely you are visiting this page because you have, or are planning to chose an iguanna for your pet. In writing this page I hope to give you helpful information on the best possible care of these interesting animals. CHOSING A CAGE Choose a cage that is large and open, allowing your iguanna to move around enough for exercise. You can add large sticks and branches for him to climb on. My cage is made from a discarded entertainment unit. To enclose it measure height and width of opening, cut a plexiglass sheet the dimensions you need for a door. (or have this done at the hardware store where you purchase the plexiglass). You will need light duty hinges to attach the door to the front of your iguana house. On the oposite side you will need a locking devise on the top and bottom to prevent your iguana from escaping. They are very clever reptiles and can find a way to run free if the door is not secured this way. it also prevents your other pets from breaking in to your iguana's cage. (I learned this by experience.) ENVIRONMENT A good way to set up a cage for an iguanna, is to have a large branch going from the bottom of the cage on one side, to the top, or near the top of the cage on the other. A heat light should be set so that it is just above the high point of your branch. Your iguanna then has the freedom to move up the branch if he needs to be closer to the heat, or down the branch if he chooses to cool off. A heat lamp is very important. In their natural environment Iguanas are able to lie in the sun when their body temperature becomes cool. Keeping a lamp above them in their cage helps them stay warm and comfortable. Chosing a lamp that gives off U-V rays is a good choice because it is close to simulating the sun. the uv rays allow your Iguanna to create it's own vitamins. This happens naturally when iguana's are exposed to actual sunlight. Place a Heat-Rock on the floor of his cage, never close to the heat light. If it placed too close to the rock the light will heat the rock to extreme temperatures, causing severe burns to your iguanna. BEDDING Always have Pine Shavings or other form of covering such as Astroturf, on the bottom of the iguanna cage. This allows the iguanna to walk on the cage bottom effortlessly, and also is easy to clean. CAUTION : Please..NO Cedar Shavings. The fumes from this product have been known to cause respiratory difficulties in small animals, and death in some cases. COMFORT Many iguannas love to have a pan of water on the bottom of the cage, so that your pet can swim if you can't supply this, you can run a shallow bath for him in your own bath-tub. This is great exercise for your iguanna, and a good way to help him shed his old skin by softening it which allows it to fall off easier Please remember that iguannas are very sensitive to cold temperatures NEVER PLACE THEM IN COLD WATER! This can shock their systems, and cause death in iguannas. RoomTemperature water is best |
