One of my main interests would have to be IRC (-International Relay Chat, or Interesting Riveting Conversation!!). I have made many good friends (-and family members!) through this absolutely fabulous form of communication :)
I discovered IRC soon after it was put on the college system the Christmas of my first year, but didn't actually learn how to get on it to chat until 14th March that year (1996). I liked it so much that I decided to have a chat the next evening too. That was when my IRC-family began...
At that time I only ever ventured into #newbies. It was in that very same channel, 15th March 1996, when I was still living in fear of the ops, that I met and married my husband Muz. The Rev Michael Whitcombe (-my vicar from back home) was there in spirit to marry us, and when she realised what was going on, one of the ops, then known as E_Mae (-since becoming Dejavudu) volunteered to be my flower girl. She has since gone on to become my much adored Auntie Shell from Denver Colorado and married Uncle Ian (for real!) on a mountain :)
It was soon after my marriage that I started to go into #ircnewbies. I still pop in on the very rare occasion to catch up with the few people I made friends with there. (-It's not that it's unfriendly, but that I was always too busy in #newbies to make friends there too!!)
IRC has it's bad points, as do most things in life. As always, though, I try to make some good come out of it! One of the most annoying bad points is called a 'net-split', where the servers people use to chat on, disconnect from one another. It was May 1996 when I discovered another member of my family this way... my Mum Gigem :) We just got chatting (even though she was one of those big scary ops!!) in the then near empty #newbies (because of the split, that is!). She was just so much like myself, how could she not become my much loved IRC-Mum?? I've also gained my sister Casey, and brothers Cameron and Conner through her. It's through our 'bond' that I've discovered a love of travelling, and made my first overseas trip in the summer 1998, when I went to meet that part of my family (who live in College Station, Texas), amongst a few other friends :)
It was sometime in the summer of 1996 that I started to go on IRC in the mornings, before my lectures. As my #newbies friends were still in bed at that time, I started to venture into #irclub, and made a few friends there. It was also there I met my big sis Emiee/CitiQ from Malaysia. I still venture into #irclub on the rare occasion to catch up with people. Most of the time, though, I'll meet people from #irclub in it's spin-off ircity.
It was in the summer of 1996 that #newbies split 3-ways, as I was to discover on my return from the holidays. I was encouraged by a few people to venture into #Clotho's_Web, and eventually made it in October 1996. I got to know a few people whom I had only known as names in #newbies, as 'people' in this much smaller setting. I also met new friends there.
I think it must have been about January 1998 when I discovered another #newbies spin-off called #start, through my good friend shorty (commonly known as J_Ee). It is another small but friendly channel where I have got to know a lot of people better :)
While I was in the states July-August 1998, I discovered my beloved #ircity had also generated spin off's such as #irchome and #rosegarden, both of which I visit fairly frequently. All these spin-off's are getting a bit much now, but I always try to keep in touch with my friends from my old favourite channels :))
As for my family, I now have so many members that I can't keep up with them all (no thanks to my sis Emiee who keeps giving me new siblings!) I will, however, briefly mention a few (in the order they were gained!) :
Uncle Rupi : Mum's 'brother' naturally became my uncle. He's not bad for a German!!! :))
Cooper : Mum's son who also naturally become my brother. Although he only lives 'up north', we've yet to meet!! I'm now also a doting Auntie through him since my gorgeous niece Alison was born :))
BIGG : He started off as someone Mum 'rejected' as a son, so I took him on as my brother. Turned out that he was best mates with my hubbie!!! :)
Uncle Womby : Think this one must have been out of choice! He's such a truely adorable character from Wollongong, Australia :)
Baz, Freddy, and Ian : At the time I discovered from Emiee that they were my brothers, they were all studying at Bolton. I didn't mind a bit that they became family! I'm close to them all in different ways, and love them to bits! :)
Uncle Dominic : I forget what nick he uses as he's never on-line much! Anyway, we'd spoken a few times on IRC before I went to Bolton for the first time with Baz. I just blurted out to Baz the first night that I was there, that if he didn't behave, I'd have to get my Uncle Dom to beat him up! The name's just stuck! And why not?! :))
Meer : She was the next person I discovered Emiee had made a sis of mine. She knows more about additions to that side of the family than I do!!! :)
