I was in Bremerton about 5 years ago and saw the Gray in the inactive ship moorings. It was a sad moment to realize that all the TLC we collectively expended to keep it sailing had all come to what seemed like an early ending. I especially n ticed the stays we had installed in Todd Shipyard in 75 to keep the new fiberglass mast from breaking off. I will never forget Capt Mcghee's and my excitement when they first lit off the surface radar and it hit one stay like a guitar string. We were su prised we did not lose the whole mast. It unfortunately was indicative of the quality work from the shipyard which dogged us for several years after that (including requiring the complete removal of the ASROC launcher as I remember). Sorry to see her cu up, but it must be she, like me, is getting old. Best wishes Shipmates!! |

The GRAY on the 30th of AUG 2000, was moved from her nest at the NDRF Suisun Bay,a distance of about 37 miles. To berth at the former Hunters Point Naval Shipyard in San Francisco(remember the DSRA 89 fiasco), for her to start the process of breaking for scrap. We all knew that maybe this would happen, and would have preferred that she be sold to sail under another lag ,or, even turned into a museum ship. What a great memory! The ship was immaculate, the crew was gracious, and the experience was my favorite part of my trip. Six years later, I was taking pictures of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Gray passed underneath, much to my surprise. On my honeymoon in 1993, my wife and I were driving from San Jose to Washington State when I saw the Gray resting (waiting to be chopped up?) in an inlet with some other rusting warships. I knew that this would be the last time I would see the Gray. I want to congratulate and thank the officers and crew of the Gray for their service. Well done! I wasn't there for the Decommisioning, but STG1 Tom Kacensky told me all about it. My fondest memories were of the two REFTRA trips to Pearl Harbor and all those visits to Canada. I couldn't wait to get out when I was there, but boy do I miss alot of those times and the old Sonar crew we had. I was there when Larry Verducci left the shi in SanDiego to take the ships rec van to S.F. He ended up crashing the van and ending his Navy Career by breaking his neck. I miss Larry too. I sure would like to hear from some of the crew that I remember, and the Sonar gang Sky, Big Al, Bath-quake, Rowland, Cooksey, Scotty, Lehr, I know I am leaving someone out.
