John plays a boy called Sam Wier.
His character is described as a freshman who is a bit insecure about the High School life. but luckly he has his parents Harold (Joe Flahertly) and Jean ( Beacky Ann Baker) and his big sister Lindsey ( Linda Cardellini) to help him through the journey. Also his best friends Neal (Samm Levine) and Bill (Martin Starr) helps him too.
