Battalion was moved and subordinated to IV Army Corps (IV AK)
north from Lake Ladoga on 31.12.1939. At the end of February it
was moved to Bay of Viborg.

Swedish speaking unit. Subordinated to Pellinki Sector (PLo.).
Secured coast between Spjutsund and Kabböle. On 16.2.1940
battalion moved and subordinated to Viborg Sector (VLo.). Battalion
fought at Pulliniemi (Koivisto), Teikarsaari island and later at
Vilaniemi and Nisalahti area.

Erillinen pataljoona 20 (Er.P 20)
(Separate Battalion 20)
Karjaa, 5.3.40- Heinlahti, Nisalahti
Swedish speaking unit. In reserve of Hanko Sector (Ha.Lo.) for the
defence of either Hanko Peninsula or Lappohja area. Battalion was
called as "South Ostrobothnian Elderly Men Battalion". In March
1940 it was moved to Bay of Viborg and fought at Heinlahti -
Nisalahti area.

Erillinen pataljoona 21 (Er.P 21)

Pyhtää, 21.2.40- Uuras, Suonionsaari island and Turkinsaari island
Subordinated to Kotka Sector (KLo.). Secured coast between
Ruotsinpyhtää and Neuvoton. In February 1940 battalion was moved
to Bay of Viborg and subordinated to Viborg Sector (VLo.). It defended
areas at Uuras direction (Hannukkalansaari and Pukinsaari islands)
and later Suonionsaari and Turkinsaari islands.

Erillinen pataljoona 22 (Er.P 22)
(Separate Battalion 22)
Inkeroinen, 1./2.1.40- north from Lake Ladoga, 8.3.40- Vilaniemi
and Vilajoki

In reserve of Kotka Sector (KLo.) at Inkeroinen. On 31.12.1939
battalion was moved to IV Army Corps (IV AK) and further back
to Bay of Viborg on 8.3.1940. It fought at Vilaniemi - Vilajoki area.

Erillinen pataljoona 23 (Er.P 23)
(Separate Battalion 23)
Valamo Island, 6.12.39- Mantsi island
Subordinated to Naval Defence of Lake Ladoga (LMe.P) for the
defence of Valamo island. On 5.12.1939 its 1st Company was
moved to Mantsi island soon followed by the rest of the battalion.

Virolahti, 4.3.40- Nisalahti and Vilaniemi
Subordinated to Kotka Sector (KLo.). Secured coast between
Mäntlahti and Orslahti. Later fought at Bay of Viborg at Nisalahti -
Vilaniemi area.

Jalkaväkirykmentti 22 (JR 22)
(Infantry Regiment 22)
Turku, 30.11.-8.12.39 Pohja - Tammisaari - Lappohja region
Subordinated to Detachment H (Os.H). On 30.11.1939 was moved
to Tammisaari (Ekenäs) region where secured coast areas. On
8.12.1939 was moved to Karelian Isthmus and attached to
6th Division (6.D). On 1.1.1940 division was re-named as 3.D
and regiment became Infantry Regiment 9 (JR 9).

Detachment Jokela was formed on 22.1.1940 with two infantry
companies, MG platoon (6x Maxim MG), engineer platoon and
anti-tank detachments. "Naval guerrillas" acted in tank killing and
[sea/land] mining duties mainly at Koivisto area and at Bay of Viborg
in the direction of Narvi and Ruonti islands. Detachment had ten
"snowmobiles" in its disposal.

Detachment Tuuli
was formed on 22.1.1940 with two rifle platoons
and a MG platoon. Detachment operated south from Tiuri island and

Pataljoona Aaltonen (Pat.A)
(Battalion Aaltonen)

Formed by Helsinki Naval Station (Hel.LAs) with two infantry
companies (Lt. J. Pirhonen and Lt. A. Pöri) and a MG company
(Lt. P. Juntunen). On 25.2.1940 battalion was subordinated
to Kotka Sector (KLo.) and moved to Kotka area. On 4.3. it was
moved eastwards to Virolahti Subsector and defended Pukkio
and Pitkäpaasi islands in heavy battles until the end of war
together with 2nd Separate MG Company.

Pataljoona Hällfors (Pat.Häll.)
(Battalion Hällfors)
20.2.40- Turku, 27.2.40- Pulliniemi, Tuppura island, Teikari island,
Vilaniemi, Häränpäänniemi

Formed by L-SMe.P. Trained and equipped for winter warfare. One of
its infantry companies was formed by Turku Naval Station and one
by Satakunta Sector (SLo.). On 24.2.1940 battalion was moved to
Viipuri Sector (VLo.). On 28.2. 3./Pat. Häll. (Lt. K. Korhonen) arrived
in Tuppura island [Tuppuransaari] coastal artillery fort and was
involved in defence battles since 2.3.1940. On 3.3. Finnish troops
had to leave the encircled island suffering heavy 30% losses during
the fleeing on open ice. The rest of the battalion fought at Vilaniemi.
Between 7.3. - 10.3. battalion was re-arranged at Säkkijärvi having
now only two infantry companies but was not involved in further battles.

Pataljoona Häyrinen / Helminen (Pat.Häy./Hel.)
(Battalion Häyrinen / Helminen)
Koivisto, 1.3.40- Teikari island, 4.3.40- Vilaniemi
Formed from the personnel of Humaljoki and Saarenpää Forts and
members of local Civil Guards on 24.2.1940. Battalion fought at
Koivisto and Teikarsaari island and later at Vilaniemi (Bay of Viborg).

Pataljoona Jussila (Pat.J)
(Battalion Jussila)
19.2.40- Hamina, ?.2.40- Muhulahti, ?.3.40- Uuras island, Riihelä
Detachment was originally formed from the personnel of Oulu Sector
(OLo.) and was moved in December 1939 at first to Kymijoki river
line for fortification duties. Battalion was formed there on 19.2.1940
using auxiliary reservists. It was moved to Muhulahti area at Bay
of Viborg at the end of February 1940 but operated at Uuraansaari
island and Riihelä.

Pataljoona Kiveliö / Suominen (Pat.K / S)

20.2.40- Helsinki, 22.2.40- Pulliniemi, 4.3.40- Muhulahti
Formed in February 1940 from the auxiliary reserve of coastal
artillery, Coast Guard personnel and the personnel of already
abandoned coastal batteries. Defended coast at Bay of Viborg
between Ristiniemi and Muhulahti since 25.2.1940.

Formed of 4th, 5th and 6th Separate Bicycle Companies. Moved and

Civil Guard Battalions subordinated to Naval Forces

1. Civil Guard Battalions of the "Hamina Sector"

Four Civil Guard Battalions [Suojeluskuntapataljoona] called
initially "Battalions of the Hamina Sector" (which actually never
existed) were formed, equipped and trained during the winter 1940.
They were subordinated to Kotka Sector (KLo.) on 27.2. and were
mobilized since 3.3.1940. Three battalions were subordinated to
Virolahti Subsector while one was held in reserve at Inkeroinen area.
Battalion Commanders were usually Chiefs of the local Civil Guards.
Personnel consisted of volunteer Civil Guard Boys, old auxiliary
reservists, old personnel of Civil Guard and men released from
military service. Units were equipped with Swedish rifles.

I Pataljoona (I Pat.) Miehikkälä, Pitkäpaasi island
(I Battalion)
1st Company: subordinated to forts, command place at Pukkio island
2nd Company:
Miehikkälä, 4.3.40- Virojoki (parts at Pitkäpaasi

Mobilized on 3.3.1940 by Virolahti and Miehikkälä Civil Guards
and Virolahti Naval Civil Guard which all formed one company.

(IV Battalion)
Formed on 4.3.1940 from the Kymmene Dahl Guard Company
(Kymenlaakson vartiokomppania), Kymmene Dahl Military Police
Company
(Kymenlaakson sotapoliisikomppania), auxiliary reservists
and men released from service due to their civilian tasks. Civil Guard
Boys of the Guard Company participated in coast battles at Virolahti.

2. Civil Guard Units formed in the "Kymmene Dahl"

In winter 1940 two Civil Guard Battalions [Suojeluskuntapataljoona]
were formed further away from the coast at Kymmene [River] Dahl
area [Kymenlaakso]. Civil Guard Companies [Suojeluskunta-
komppania] were formed also at Iitti, Valkeala and Luumäki.
Civil Guard Platoons [Suojeluskuntajoukkue] were formed in
northern Luumäki and at Jaala. These units were mostly in reserve
and had similar personnel and equipment to the Civil Guard
battalions described above.

I Kymenlaakson suojeluskuntapataljoona
(I Kymmene Dahl Civil Guard Battalion)
Unit was to be formed on the Kouvola - Kuusankoski - Voikkaa area
but it was not mobilized during the Winter War.

II Kymenlaakson suojeluskuntapataljoona Liikkala, 4.3.40- Kotka
(II Kymmene Dahl Civil Guard Battalion)
Three rifle companies led by 2Lt(R.) A. Sorsa, 2Lt(R.) B. Bygdén,
CG MSgt L. Nieminen were formed by the Sippola, Inkeroinen,
Myllykoski, Anjala
and Elimäki Civil Guards. MG company led by
CG Sgt E. Ikonen was formed by Inkeroinen and Myllykoski Civil
Guard
s. A small HQ Company was formed of the officers and
personnel from all mentioned Civil Guards. Battalion was initially
in reserve of Kotka Sector (KLo.) but was on 4.3.1940 subordinated
to Kirkkomaa Subsector. Battalion constructed field fortifications at
Mustamaa island and had guard and patrol duties at Kotka area.
It didn't see any action.
