I've always thought it a pity that a lot of character developement got cut out in the anime series due to the limited number of episodes it had. (Considering that each manga volume [Consisting of 10 chapters each] had to be compressed into about 3 episodes each, that's already pretty good) One of the characters with less developement was Fuuko. Her past's been shown at least twice in the manga, but we never get even a shred of this in the anime - only a hint in the Reiran Katashiro episode where she confides that she used to be teased all the time for her tomboyishness. That's rather sad, since her childhood is really interesting, and shows you a different side to Fuuko that would otherwise never be seen. Thus, I decided to translate a little of her past (shown in volume 10 of the manga) so that other people would know what it was like.
As a sidenote, I've always wanted to translate Fuuko's side story with illustrations, but unfortunately I'll go nuts if I had to scan in all those pages [the side-story's about the length of an ordinary chapter], so I don't think there's any chance of that happening. ^_^ If you do want a text translation of that side-story, though, (shown in volume 7) why not head on over to the Uruha Jyushinshuu, a terrific place for manga translations.
Fuuko: Uh... Fuuko: What is this... this small injury... Fuuko: This little pain is nothing! |
Text: In Elementary School... (Fuuko sees two bullies beating up a small boy, who's crying.) |
(She chases them away by hitting them with her bag. Angry,
the two bullies carve graffiti on her desk) Words on desk: Fake gorilla. Idiot. Tortoise. Ugly rascal. Tomboy. |
(Enraged, Fuuko tears her Japanese book in half. All the hildren give her the cold shoulder, even the one whom she saved from the bullies. [Although he seems to feel bad about it]) |
