First, we the show opens up to a scene where a young teenage boy with spikey hair and wearing an orange cap is doing the most cool and amazing flips and twists. ^_^ The wall the boy has jumped over suddenly breaks down in a cloud of dust and debris, and from this emerges a muscular boy with a mohawk and a nose ring. The first boy jumps up a tree, and the second loudly informs him that "I'll beat you of these days, Recca! I've got you now!" and punches the tree with all he's got. Recca falls to the ground, but "Recca" actually turns out to be a straw scarecrow clothed in Recca's jacket! (Beats me how he managed to get that "doll"; maybe he hid it beforehand in that tree) "You'll never catch me, Domon!" Recca shouts at him. Enraged, Domon chases after Recca, only to fall into a pit which Recca had previously dug to use as a trap! Domon is REALLY pissed off now, and begins to insult Recca and about his obsession with ninjas. Recca gets annoyed and lights up some fireworks, throwing them in the pit. Domon is, of course, fried, and screams that he'll defeat Recca one day. As Recca jumps back over the wall, he says "That will never happen, but I'll tell you what. If by some miracle you manage to defeat me, then I'll be your personal ninja!" and disappears.
Cut to the front of a house, with a sign which roughly says (Couldn't catch the words entirely) Hanabishi something or other ^_^. (I wager it says also "Fireworks maker or something. It was too fast for me to see) Inside, Recca calls for his dad, asking him what he would like for lunch, and his father (Shigeo Hanabishi) turns around. To Recca's consternation, he is again smoking while making the fireworks. He promptly kicks his father across the face, (!!!) giving an exclamation of "Dad, how many times have I told you not to do that? It's dangerous!" (Shigeo has the imprint of Recca's show on his face. LOL) Shigeo admits that he's wrong, but then suddenly kicks Recca back in the face, (boy, is this a violent family or what? ^_^) and tells Recca he's eaten already. Dazed, Recca mutters "We ninjas are supposed to be able to withstand anything. Right." and flops down on the floor.
Cut to an enclosed place where a man, engulfed in a cold blue flame, mumbles weakly "Mr. Mori... please help me...", staggering towards the fish tank as a last desperate attempt to save himself before he dies. The man sitting at the desk (Obviously Mr. Mori) comments on what a fool that man was and that all humans are weak, the latter part addressed to the masked man in the red robes standing next to him. He craves immortality, and the man in red vows to help him do whatever it takes to achieve his gain.
Next, we see Recca sitting at a table with a hotdog in one hand and a can of milk in the other. Taking a sip from his milk, then proceeding to eat his hotdog, he says "Wow! This sure is good!". Nearby, he sees a group of children running past, and a gentle female voice calls out "Stop running! You might trip and fall!", and low and behold one of the children really DOES fall! Running up to the crying child, Recca sees a beautiful young girl dressed in pink helping the child up, and he blushes slightly. Feeling his gaze, the girl looks up and smiles gently at him. Recca continues gawking at her, until he feels something wet and realizes that he has just succeeded in spilling his milk all over himself! While trying to salvage what is left of his milk, he proceeds to drop his hotdog as well. ^_^ (I quote Recca, "For Pete's sake! So much for my lunch!)
After cleaning himself up, Recca decides to go look for that girl and finds her at a nearby construction site, where the children are admiring the machines at work. (Hey wow, that's pretty awesome!") The girl warns them, "It's very dangerous here. Let's move on." and is about to leave when a machine accidentally bumps into a pile of pipes which come plummeting towards her! The children quickly run of in panic, but one scared child clings to her legs, and just when they are about to be curshed, Recca the hero pushes them out of the way, only to be knocked unconscious and injured himself. (He's lying in a pretty big pool of blood which is gushing out of the wound in his head) Almost immediately it's over, and the passer-bys, seeing the injured boy, shout for help. Desperate, the girl looks around and, having no choice, leans over Recca and they are surrounded by a bright white light.
Recca finds himself dreaming; he is kneeling before a woman dressed in a pink kimono, (It may just be me, but she doesn't look pretty at all to me. Not really any resemblance to Yanagi, just the hair colour) as cherry blossoms swirl in the background. The woman lifts her head and says, "Recca, thank you for saving my life. Without you, I wouldn't be here." and Recca replies "Of course! It is my duty as a ninja to protect you." before waking up.
When he DOES wake up, however, and finds Yanagi on top of him,(She says "Your injuries will be all right now, Mr. Hanabishi." Turns out she managed to heal his wounds, since he's obviously all right now) he completely freaks out, since it looks like they are doing something, um, kinda unsavoury. 0_o. Snatching up his hat and jamming it on his head, he screams to the passer-bys "It's not what you think! It's not what you think!" and quickly runs away, with everyone looking at him in bewilderment.
As Recca sits down on a bench in a park, panting, the girl from before comes up to him. She introduces herself: "I'm Yanagi Sakoshita, sir." (My, but she IS polite. ^_^) He stares at her for a while, then, when she asks him if anything is the matter, he mumbles "Uh, well, you just look like the princess in my dream." and scratches he head awkwardly. Sitting down next to him, she says, "You must think that I'm... a little weird." Recca says "Yeah... a little...". She makes him promise to keep it a secret, and he does, saying "This shouldn't be made public knowledge. You never know what crazy freaks will come after you," and they laugh. (How ironic, really) Then, grabbing her hand, he pulls her along to a darkened warehouse, saying that he wants to show her something. (Don't think dirty, you hentais!) Turns out that the surpise is actually a bunch of fireworks, and he throws them up into the air after lighting them, telling her that they were specially made by himself. Looking above at the exploding fireworks, she whispers, "It's beautiful..." Recca, in turn, says the same thing, only this time he is looking at Yanagi instead. ^_^ Yanagi asks, "Did you say something?" Extremely flustered, Recca answers, "No! No, it wasn't me!" and there is an awkward pause between the two.
Suddenly, the shadows on the ground start to behave really weirdly, and a strange woman dressed in black emerges from it. She introduces herself as Shadow and demands that Recca show her his flame, but he doesn't know what he's talking about. Pulling out a knife, she says "Really? Then I guess I'll just have to force it out of you." Recca quickly throws a few of his special fireworks to create a smoke screen in front of her, grabbing Yanagi's hand and running towards the entrance. Suddenly, a knife comes whizzing out of the air like a boomerang, cutting his leg. Yanagi, of course, wants to heal it, but Recca refuses, afraid to let the insane woman (She really DOES look psychotic here) find out about their secret. Shadow once again throws the knife at Recca, but he flips backwards to avoid it, landing on his bad leg. Crumpling to the floor, Shadow is about to move in for the kill when Yanagi stands in front of him, arms outstretched, telling her to stop picking on Recca. Smiling evilly, the woman says, "Then why don't you just heal him with your power?" and attacks her, slashing her on the arm while Recca and Yanagi are both still in shock at her words. Yanagi falls to the ground and Recca slides forward to catch her. Yanagi says "I'm so sorry about this, Recca. I'm such a burden. If I weren't here you would have been able to defeat her." and heals his cut leg just before she faints.
Recca is REALLY furious now, and attempts to fight back, but is brutally punched and kicked by her. Seeing that Recca STILL refuses to show his flame, she decides to kill Yanagi. This enrages Recca STILL further, and he shouts, "No!", stretching his arm towards her when... the palm of his hand suddenly bursts into flame! Recca stares at it in amazement, and Shadow is pleased to see that he has finally managed to conjure up his flame. Thinking quickly, Recca thrusts his hand towards her, and for a moment, Shadow looks shocked. Then, allowing herslf to be engulfed in the flame, she seems to be burnt to a crisp, but this soon proves to be worng. "A Flame of such little magnitude like that could never kill me. You would have to be much more powerful than THAT." and disappears.
For the last scene, we see Recca carrying an uncoonscious Yanagi back home, piggy-back style. Yanagi wakes up and is surprised to see Recca. Asking about the strange woman earlier, Recca replies, "Don't you worry. I've sent her away. Oh, by the way, from now on, I'm your ninja, and you're my princess." Startled, Yanagi remarks, "That sounds kind of weird." to which Recca retorts "I don't care if it's weird. I've made up my mind." and they continue their trek homewards.
A voice-over proclaims "It was on this day that Recca Hanabishi had a fateful encounter with Yanagi Sakoshita, which was to open the door of a destiny spanning 400 years."
