Body dark reddish-brown with 7 to 8 dark bars. 9 dorsal spines. Preopercle rounded, 2 sharp edges at the top of opercle. This is a small species as the max size is only 26 cm TL. May look identical to the few local grouper species but follow the description closely, there is a difference.
This fish was caught, somewhere east of Sg during "My 2nd Offshore trip" on 5/10/02
