Malabar Grouper Sometimes, it's also known as 'Greasy grouper' locally, hence the confusion with the actual greasy grouper. Epinephelus malabaricus Serranidae [Sea bases: Groupers & Fairy basslets] 27.7 cm [max to 234 cm] 6.4 cm [max to 150 kg] Marine, brackish 0 to 150 m Coastal coral, rocky reefs, estuaries, mangrove swamps, sandy/mud bottoms. Feeds on fishes & crustaceans. Highly commercial. Yes, this particular fish was caught off the reclaimed land east of S'pore, Changi, during my 4th offshore fishing trip on 12/2/03. Brownish in colour, with small blackish brown & white spots on the body, usually with dark brownish-black bars visible on body. Fins with scattered black spots. Often mixed up with 'Greasy Grouper[E. tauvina]' but with larger round spots[sometimes orange-red spots] & w/o white spots. |
