Mikael Renberg is back in the orange and black and this webmaster is extremely happy. He's a skilled right wing with decent speed, playmaking ability, and most importantly should bring scoring depth to the squad.
Renberg is a powerful skater with good hockey sense that allows him to anticipate plays well. His wrist shot is probably his best. Renberg will look to make a pass when he has a finisher around, but he's learned to shoot more over the course of his career. He is a two-way forward who can play both the power play and the penalty kill. He plays physically, although he doesn't fight, and his size is a good asset.
Renberg seemed to struggle as captain of the Lightning. On the Flyers, however, he is a good presence in the locker room, where he was and obviously still is very popular. When his return was anounced, both John LeClair and Eric Lindros were clearly estatic. He will be one of the funnier presences on a rather quiet passive team. Renberg will probably play wing for Brind'Amour as Keith Jones seems a good fit on the first line.
At 26, Renberg has time to turn his career around from the pit its been in since his abdominal injury. If he can recover the dominancy of his rookie season, his return may help the Flyers return to the Stanley Cup finals
(added 2/9/2000) Since I first wrote this profile, many things have happened: Renberg was traded to Phoenix and then returned to play in Sweden. I still remember him fondly as a Flyer, but I don't know if we'll ever see him play in the NHL again. Since I wrote this profile, I've also redesigned this web site, eliminating player profiles for many players who are no longer with the Flyers. I'm going to keep this one up, however, because I know Renberg fans drift by here every one in a while. Enjoy the rest of Flyertown.
