Extinct Mackerel Shark
Cretolamna appendiculata (Agassiz)

Age - Tertiary  Commonality - Uncommon

Cretolamna appendiculata is one of few species of shark known to have survived the K/T boundary. Better know as one of the more common finds in the Cretaceous locations of NJ, these teeth do on occasion turn up at Tertiary sites. For this reason, I've included Cretolamna appendiculata in both the Cretaceous and Tertiary sections of this website. C. appendiculata is believed to have become extinct during the Eocene.

See the Cretaceous Cretolamna appendiculata page for a more detailed description.

One of the very few Tertiary examples I've come across.
