In 1870, there is a little more information given about the Almshouses in Newport.  The Almshouses built on either side of the Grammar School entrance and endowed by William Adams, in 1657, are mentioned, however the Almshouses built 'for four poor women', endowed by William Glover in 1446, which were re-built in 1836 by public subscription,  are now given an address and described thus: 'There are Almshouses for four aged women in Vine-yard Rd., rebuilt in 1836 ; they are an ancient charity called the Church Almshouses, under the management of twelve governors.'

Also 'A reading room was established October 1st., 1851 ; [elsewhere described as the 'Mechanics Institute'], and a Working Men's Club, in the High St., of which the Rector of Newport is the president, and John Bodenham, esq., is the treasurer.'

The Local newspaper has undergone a change of name and publisher; still described as established in 1854/5, it is now the 'Newport Advertiser & Market Drayton Chronicle' and 'has now a very large circulation.' [For Publisher and alternative name,  see 'Commercial' residents.]

The Duke of Sutherland is lord of the manor.  The 'principal landowners' are Sir Thomas F. Fletcher Boughey;  J.C.B Burrough, esq., and R.M. Leeke, esq.
The Parish Clerk is now John Trevitt James, of St. Mary's Street.
