Culture Club
live at Croc's - 1981
October 24, 1981, Culture Club played our first live show at Crocs nightclub in Rayleigh, closte to Roy's home turf in Essex. The poster read, "Culuture Club, featuring Lieutenant Lush,  ex-Bow Wow Wow"I wsa so proud I kept the poster as proof that we were a real band.  Jon even managed to get a 60 pounds fee.  Our star dressing room was Alison's mum's house nearby in Grays where we were plied with tea and lots of encouragement.  Roy's hairdressing skills were put to good use.  We all wore Foundry Clothes. I wanted us to look like we had a real identity.  Sue made me a special outfit, a smock top with matching trousers ans hoes all printed with Star of David.  I finished it off with a white Rast hat made by Stephen Jones.
Crocs was Southende's premier freak club, made famous by local chart stars Depehe Mode. It drew a mixed crowd, office boys and secretaries, white- faced futurists in rubber and dog collars, trendier types in Westwood pirate hats, rockabillies with high tops and ftat tops. That first gig was exciting and haphazard.  I shouted my way through the set, spitting out one-liners between songs. 'This is Roy.  He's straight, I thin' Still, we looded good and the small crowd reacted well.  We were relieved to have done our first gig, and in front of a celebrity audience - Dave Gahan from Depeche Mode was there.
