Below are four pictures of a bulker split into two pieces. This was the result of the improper stowage of cargo. It is critical with all ships that weight of the cargo is properly distributed through out the vessel. With containerships it is the responsibility of the chief mate to supervise cargo stowage based on his cargo plan. Were cargo to be stored with empty containers below deck and the full ones on deck, the ship would be so unseaworthy that she would tip over. A ship can be "trimmed" by moving water between ballast tanks, located through out the hull, during cargo loading and to insure, or to change the trim when she is underway. If you are interested in rather obscure topic the next time you are on board ask the chief mate to show you the cargo loading plan.
