Nominees for the Pre-Oscars announced.

“‘Return of the King’ should win everything!” declare thousands of slavish fans.

Yesterday the Hollywood Foreign Press Association honored 33 feature-length films with Golden Globe nominations, including 28 English language films.  As usual, the vast majority of nominees were released in the last half of 2003, and many of them, including “Cold Mountain” and “Big Fish” have not yet even hit theatres.  Some may not even see a wide-release until early 2004.  Only seven nominated films were released prior to September—including “
Seabiscuit,” “Bend It Like Beckham,” and “Finding Nemo”—and none of them has received more than two nominations.

Leading the pack are Anthony Minghella’s (“The Talented Mr. Ripley”) Civil War adaptation “
Cold Mountain,” with 8 nominations, including Best Picture (Drama), Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor (Drama) for Jude Law, Best Actress (Drama) for Nicole Kidman, and Best Supporting Actress for Renee Zellweger.  Next, with five nominations each, are Sofia Coppola’s tender “Lost in Translation” and Clint Eastwood’s psychological thriller “Mystic River.”  “The Lord of the Rings:  The Return of the King” received four nominations, including Best Drama, while “Master & Commander:  The Far Side of the World” and “The Last Samurai” were each nominated three times.

The Golden Globes, like the Oscars, try to strike a balance between the more esoteric critical circles, where obscurity is a prerequisite for consideration, and populist competitions, such as the People’s Choice, Blockbuster Awards, or the numerous internet polls, where “Lord of the Rings” will be battling it out with “
The Matrix Reloaded,” while “X2” and “Pirates of the Caribbean” trail close behind.
