Vertigo (1958, 129 min, PG) **** - Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starring James Stewart, Kim Novak, and Barbara Bel Geddes. Lusciously-photographed and unsettlingly haunting fable about the dangers of trying to mold the outside world to meet our desires, and the rage we feel when we fail. A detective with a fear of heights (Stewart) becomes obsessed with a woman he is hired to protect, and then a second woman who looks just like her (Novak, in a double role), all while under the matronly gaze of an old girlfriend (Bel Geddes). Murder and double-crosses ensue, but the crime story is tertiary to our protagonist’s compulsions. Often prominent on “Sight & Sound’s” Top Ten Movies of All Time. |
