My first experience in Sahaja Yoga took place many years before my meditation practice took shape. I had tried Sahaja Yoga meditation in college and thought it was really great. However, I was not ready to commit to regular practice. Chance would have it that, years later, my own mother would take up Sahaja Yoga meditation practice. I knew it was a really good thing so I encouraged her. She had been practicing for maybe two years when she came to visit on this occasion.

It was the summer of 2000. I had recently given birth to my second child and I was facing the annual family reunion on my husband's side of the family in about a month. Although this gathering is really wonderful in so many ways, I was always 'worse for wear' after these events. I thought, "if I ask my mother how to meditate, perhaps I will be in better shape for this reunion." I was determined to be at peace during the two week long gathering. So, the night before she left, my mother showed me the practice. I still had the origial photograph I had been given eleven years prior (somehow I managed to keep it despite moving eight times.)

Well, I was so pleased with how much better I felt, and how much easier it was for me to deal with stressful situations, and how comforted I felt, I continued the daily practice. After about four months of practice, I felt the cool breeze. I cried. I lamented that I had not stuck with the practice all those years ago. But, I am so grateful to have been given another chance and to have someone in my family that is there for me. And most of all, I am grateful for Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi.
