SINGAPORE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
An annual event in the local film making industry. For this year (2005), we had it from 14th - 30th April. Viewers will get a chance in appreciating movies from all around the world at one go.
SINGAPORE'S NATIONAL DAY
The nation's birthday! Widely celebrated on the island every year on the 9th of August, since we declared our independence in 1965. The people will be treated with a great show, usually prepared and rehearsed as early as 6 months before, and magnificent fireworks in the sky throughout the month.
CHINESE NEW YEAR
The yearly festive celebration for the Chinese here, the festival's first 2 days have been declared a Public Holiday and Chinatown will be converted into a huge carnival for all to make their festive purchase of traditional food and new clothes.
The festival usually takes place between the month of January and February, subjected to the Lunar Calendar of that year. At the strike of midnight one day before the festival, the people would celebrate with arrangements of Lion Dance, Dragon Dance, crazy cheap sales at the stores, and heart-thumping firecrackers-igniting at Chinatown.
On hindsight, most businesses will be closed for the first 2-4 days of the festival. Although you would get no problems with transportation, we suggest you stock up on instant noodles.
CHRISTMAS
Christmas is also another major event that we celebrate on the island. However, instead of 12 days,we usually only get the 1st day off (25th Dec). Strangely enough, the retailers would start their own "celebration" since November, with crazy year-end sales splash all over town.
Celebration and lighting decorations are more extensive along Orchard Road - the heart of Singapore where major shopping complexes have been located. Each year the Tourism Board would place an award for the best decorated mall in Singapore. It is when the malls go all the way out with their budget to get that and our eyes just get a fantastic treat in this festive season. Grab your camera along when you're here then. Hohoho~~~
CHINGAY PARADE
Slightly similar to Mardi Gras, it is an annual event which takes place right after the Chinese New Year, usually during the month of March. With over 100 years of history, the parade has evolved from mere colouful floats & lion dances to extravagant performances with world reknown special effects team flying in for the support.
