Edith Gray




William Gray and Anna Newmarch were married in 1871 at the
Trinity Church in Copley Square by Rector Phillips Brooks.
in 1871. William's parents were Charles Gray and Hepsibah Hough.
Anna's parents were Samuel Newmarch Junior and Jane Berry.






Hepsibah Hough and Charles Gray were married in Boston
before 1842. Charles' first wife Sophia had died young
in 1835. Charles and Hepsibah became parents of William,
Edgar, Alice Eva and Ida May. Charles was born in
New York City in 1811 and was the son of James Gray
who was born in Ireland. Hepsibah was born in Edgecomb, ME
in 1821 and was the daughter of John Huff
and Charlotte Billings.



William Gray had an older brother Charles Ashley who was
the eldest of the Gray siblings and was born in 1835.
Charles kept a written recollection of himself and William
as young men. Here it is for your interest...

on ship Oceanstead Captain Thomas Cunningham from Calcutta.
Sailed on the ship Carloine Tucker for New York in April 1855
or 1856. We both sailed for California by way of Panama the same
spring~1857. I returned home to the state of Maine on a visit
to my people in North Edgecomb, Maine in 1865. The family moved
to Boston in 1866. I returned to San Francisco, California in
Jan 1868. I came back to Boston in spring of 1871. Brother
William and I commenced the market business in Tremont Market
on Tremont St Sept 15 1871 as partners. We moved into the
Washington Market January 1 1872 Stall 26. William retired
from partnership July 6 1872. William went back to Capt CC
Howlands to work July 8 1872. I continued the market business
alone until Summer of 1875. Then I work for Sibbly for 2 years
more, then worked for Mr Chapman in stall 26 until my health
broke down. Brother William and Miss Eudora Newmarch were
married by Rev Phillips Brooks Nov 19-1871. I myself as a
witness. They commenced housekeeping in the Dexter Block
Suite no 14 July 1 1872. Moved from Suite 14 into Suite 16
Nov 1875. They moved from Dexter Block to Hotel Westminster
April 23- 1877. I left Boston in spring of 1882 arrived in
Bingham Broom Co N.Y. May 2. Commenced work for Mr A G Hull
in the Hub and Spoak manufactory May 2 1882.~

Alice Eva and Ida May who was born in 1846.



Charles Gray Sr died 1853 in Edgecomb, ME and Hepsibah married
again to Joel Somes and had two more children Julia and Milford.

The three Gray sisters, Florence, Edith and Edna
all graduated from highschool which was an accomplishment
for women of the late 1800s and early 1900s.
Look at how proud they are to receive their diplomas.
Edith is also holding her diploma in the picture at the top.




William (Chester) brother to the three sisters,
born in 1876 graduated from the Naval Academy in Boston.
He married Henrietta Theodora Niles Heymann.
They had no children.
