The Foundation

The Sataban Saeng Sawang is the first special preschool for handicapped children in Thailand.  The children are mostly between the ages of 2 to 8 years. The school was founded in 1979 as the first school to offer programmes for deaf-blind, learning and disabled emotionally disturbed children. Mrs Aks Ammundsen, the wife of the legiondary Danish doctor Einar Ammundsen,began giving the children physical therapy from the start and assisted in trainng Thai therapists at the school. A close relationship was therefore established early with girls from Denmark coming to work at the school for limited periods.

Two hundred and thirty handicapped children are at present attending the school which is dedicated to helping the children to learn that their handicap status does not prevent them from participating in many normal life activities.

The teaching varies from the ability to draw and paint, simple computer exercises, using Lego toys to create objects, and in particular physical therapy to increase their mobility.

Several of the children have reached the ability to attend a normal school programme following serveral years of training at the foundation.

As the Foundation receives no support from the government it is dependent on charity support as well as limited payment by parents who send their children to the school.

Many parents themselves attend the school as assistant teachers.

In February 2001 her Majesty the Queen of Denmark graciously visited the Foundation and was entertained by some of the children performing dances and various drills, whereafter she toured the facilities.

During the visit her Majesty signed the guest book and a picture of her with her first grandchild.that is now displayed at the foundation.

Following the visit a donation was received from her Majesty's and Prince Henriks charity fund.

Hydro Physio Therapy

This treatment is recommended by the physiotherapists and is in general use at Danish institutes caring for handicapped persons.

I therefore invited the physical therapists from the Sataban Saeng Sawang Foundation to come and use the whirlpool that I had built for the use of my handicapped wife for treatment of some of the handicapped children at the school.
