Mice and rats make great pets. They're low-maintenance, fun to watch, safe, and clean. They don't make any noise or need huge enclosures, so they're great even if you're in an apartment. A rodenty is where pet rodents are bred, much like a kennel is to dogs. People breed mice & rats for many reasons and with different goals, so not all rodentries are the same. When looking for a new pet, it's important for you to consider why a breeder is breeding, because these goals and priorities shape the quality of animal you'd be getting. Mus Rodenty was founded in 1999 with the goal of improving the quality of rats and mice available for pets and show. The rodentry is run by a mature adult with a long-term commitment to the rats and mice. Your new Mus rat or mouse will be set apart from the average because: - he/she was bred for health and temperament first, and bred only from parents with known backgrounds. - he/she was bred to provide a quality pet and not bred to make money. - he/she is guaranteed to have the genetics he/she is stated to have; Mus breeds for and tracks genetics. - he/she will come with a limited 21 day heath guarantee.

Mus Rodenty breeds rats and mice in small numbers. If you don't see what you want available now, please get on our waiting list. Mus specializes in American (body type) mice with variety standards kept in mind. Special focus on less common varieties such as hairless (rhino or smooth-skinned), "fuzzy" hairless, tailless (manx), and others. Show standards are used as a guideline for breeding, but health/temperament are always considered far more important than appearance. Mus has shown at four different rat/mouse club shows and is trained to judge for two of the clubs. Despite how beautiful a show mouse is, it's far more important the mouse is healthy and well tempered. Mice are bred in small numbers and the lines are tracked. This means records are kept on the overall line, the litters, and the individuals. Lines known to have serious problems with health or temperament are stopped entirely. To see what mice are available now, visit our Animals or read how to Adopt. Rats litters are born 3-6 times a year. Focus on Russian blues, fawns, and siamese in both dumbos and standard ears. Special focus on tailless (manx). Show standards are used as a guideline for breeding, but health/temperament are always considered far more important than appearance. Rats are pedigreed and registered. By doing this, a breeder gives their assurance to you that the rats' backgrounds are known. Without knowing rats' backgrounds, there is no way for a breeder to know if he/she is producing rats who might have health problems later in life, might die early, or might develop behavioral problems later in life.
Breeding Goals & Philosophy In the long run, the goal is to produce animals which are extremely healthy and well tempered. The rodenty is run as a not-for-profit type venture, and any money for adoption fees goes back towards the animals' care. In rats, one of the most common problems people have with rat is their tendency to get "colds". In rats a small cold can turn into pneumonia quickly, and it may become fatal. Many "colds" are actually flare-ups in an everyday bacteria, myco. Myco is present everywhere, and antibiotics only control the flare-ups rather than cure it. In the long run, the only real cure is to bred only the healthiest of animals. Mus achieves this by breeding only from known stock; our breeding animals do not come from pet shops or rescues. Records are kept on health and longevity. None of the mice or rats are given antibiotics "just in case" or after every show or kept on antibiotics long-term. Animals which get very ill and then recover are not bred from. Mus Rodenty practices quarantines after every single show or adoption. To date Mus Rodenty has never had SDA or Sendai.
Health Guarantee Health guarantee for three weeks (21 days) from date you get the animal. Mus mice and rats are guaranteed to be free of diseases or parasites when they leave the rodenty. After 21 days, if there is a problem, we will always adopt the animal back; however, we cannot refund any adoption fees at that point. Limitations: - the guarantee does not cover neglect, accident, injury, or extreme stress. Stress might be a broken water bottle not dispensing water for more than a day, extremely high temperatures with no air conditioning, extreme overcrowding, wounds from fighting with another animal, etc. - the guarantee does not cover vet expenses or medicine. Contact Mus Rodentry immediately with any health concerns. - the guarantee is a health guarantee only. It does not guarantee the pet will get along with his/her new cage mates or love any particular people. Mus cannot control how the animal is handled, how often he is handled, or who he is caged with. If you need advice or have concerns about the animals' temperament, please let us know and we will be happy to help you. - the guarantee does not cover animals that were exposed to any other animals during the 21 days. We would have no way of determining where the germ or parasite came from. Unfortunately this also means the guarantee does not cover animals picked up at shows (any event where others rats/mice are present). - the animal will be return to Mus at your expense. Shipping fees are not refundable.
