FIX A FERAL IN THE TOWN OF NEWBURGH, NEW YORK |
On December 29, 2001 the Town Board in Newburgh, New York took a monumental step toward the humane reduction of feral and stray cats in its community by passing Local Law # 8, An Animal Population Control Law via Spay / Neuter. On Feb 27, 2002 the Town Board established a Fund to accept donations to assist in covering the cost of sterilization and vaccinations of the feral and stray cats trapped through the efforts of volunteers from Non - Profits such as Furever Animals, Inc. "Feral" according to Webster's Dictionary is "existing in an untamed state; having returned to a wild state from domestication. Of or like a wild animal: savage." And Feral Cat colonies arise when lost or abandoned domestic cats from social colonies and breed feral or "wild" kittens. An estimated 50 million feral cats live in alleys, parking lots, abandoned buildings, and parks across the US. Left to continue the breeding process, two unneutered cats, one male and one female, can produce up to 67 cats by the 2nd year. That number jumps to 376 by the 3rd year. The Town of Newburgh has taken a humane approach to solving the problem of cat overpopulation and we are looking for the public to support this effort by SPONSORING the SPAY or NEUTER of a feral or stray cat in the TOWN of NEWBURGH. Donations can be made payable to: T-92 Town of Newburgh. Mail to : Town Clerk, Town of Newburgh, 1496 Route 300, Newburgh, New York 12550. Your support is greatly appreciated. Want to do more to help feral and stray cats? Get politically involved in your town or city and request your community pass an Animal Population Control Law via Spay / Neuter. |
