Accidents, and losses.

During it's 24 years in service, Britains Phantome did not see action.  Despite this, a total of 52 aircraft (28% of 185 purchased) either crashed or were involved in incidents serious enough to result in the aircraft's write off. Many crews too, lost their lives flying peace time missions - such is the cost of training for war.
