Elmer Alvin Bronkhorst, 86, of W12709 Hill Road, Brandon, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 1996 at All About Life Rehabilitation Center, Fond du Lac.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 3 at 11 a.m. at Alto Reformed Church. Rev. Calvin Vande Zande officiated.
He was born Feb. 6, 1909 in the Town of Alto, the son of Cornelius and Christina (Van Buren) Bronkhorst. He married Nellie Neevel Sept. 20, 1933 in Waupun.
The couple farmed in Alto until 1948. He then owned and operated the BrandonStock Yard until 1964. He was then emplyed by Du-al Gas Inc. until his retirement in 1981.
He was a member of the Alto Reformed Church, the Golden Lifers a former member of the Ripon Harmony Kings. He was also a member of the U.S. Trotting Assocation, Wisconsin Harness Horseman's Association and was listed in the Wisconsin Horseman'a Association Hall of Fame.
He trained and race harness horses for many years and was the oldest licensed harness horse driver in the U.S.
Survivors include his wife, Nellie Bronkhorst of rural Brandon; one daughter, Elaine (Eugene) Kastein; two sons, Clayton (Charlotte) Bronkhorst of Waupun, Orval (Pat) Bronkhorst; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marion (Lyle) Bresser, Catherine (Harold) DeMotts, both of Waupun; two sisters-in-law, Jeanette Bronkhorst of Brandon, Helen Bronkhorst of Juneau.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, two grandchildren, two brothers and four sisters.
