WAUPUN - James Riel, 88, of Waupun, died on Sunday, May 2, 2004 at the Waupun Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services for Jim will be held on Wednesday, May 5, at 11 a.m. at the First Reformed Church in Waupun. The Rev. Rick Boon will officiate. Burial will follow at the Alto Cemetery in Alto.

Jim was born on Aug. 14, 1915, the son of John and Winnie (Searvogel) Riel. He married Alice Smits on Jan. 16, 1941. Jim worked at National Rivet in Waupun for 36 years. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, playing pool and bowling. He especially loved to play horseshoes. Jim was an active member of the First Reformed Church in Waupun serving as deacon.

Survivors include his wife, Alice, of Waupun; five children, Wendell (Dolores) Riel, Waupun, Wannita (John) Schlom, Waupun, Jerald (Rosalie) Riel, Waupun, Dennis L. Riel, Waupun, Jeanine (Clayton), Brandon; six grandchildren, Brian Riel, Amy (Robert) Waldoch, Jeremy (Megan) Riel, Laurie (Irvin) Beek, Trisha and Katie Jahns; one great grandchild, Juliana Riel; five brothers and sisters, Walter (Katherine) Riel, Waupun, Wilbert (Joyce) Riel, Waupun, Angeline Abel, Fond du Lac, Johanna (Kenneth) Ver Stratte, Oostburg, Haleta (Clifford) Otte, Sheboygan Falls; also survived by nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and sisters; Clarence Riel, Garret Riel, Marvin Riel, Janet Streekstra and Katherine Riel.

Friends and relatives may call at the Werner-Harmsen Funeral Home in Waupun on Tuesday, May 4, from 4 until 7 p.m. and on Wednesday at church from 10 a.m. until the time of services.
