The Buffyverse Onomasticon FAQ

1. What is this onomasticon thingie, exactly?

It's a listing of the names of characters on "Buffy: the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel" and the literal definitions of their names.

2. Why isn't (insert name here) listed?

Either
a. the character has not been in an episode aired in the USA yet
b. the character did not appear in any memorable way
c. I was unable to find a meaning for the name (this is largely why so few demons are listed)
d. it's not the name of a character at all, it's your name and you don't want to bother looking it up on your own

3. But what if your definition is incorrect?

Then please, send me what you consider the correct definition and name your source.
The adress is reallygoodname@mailcity.com

4. Why are you only doing characters, and not the names of the cast and crew?

The main reason is that the character names are chosen, possibly with meaning in mind. The names of the "real" people involved are almost always a random function of their parents, and thus have little or no impact on anything.

5. Are there any online sources? I am far too lazy to bother with things like books.

The best online naming resource is Eponym , though there are many, many others.

6. Isn't listing the names of toys a bit excessive/fanatical/insane?

Oh, and that thing you do is just crammed with logic and sanity? Egad.

7. What were you on when you did this?

Sleater-Kinney and Jill Sobule mostly. Plus some Rimsky-Korsakov.

8. I thought Buffy meant "beaver." Why does your site say something else?

Less accurate name books will often list the name Buffy as being a derivative or diminutive of Beverly, which means "one from the beaver stream." There may be some Beverly's out there who call themselves Buffy, but the primary origin of the name is from Elizabeth.

9. Why is this site so drab and plain? Most Buffy and Angel sites have at least some images or graphics.

There are a couple reasons. First, while it can be nice to look at the pretty pictures, they're hell on people with slow computers or connections. And after a while, they can get boring. Plus I wanted this site to be student and worker friendly, which means no overly obvious signs that it's not just some perfectly factual presentation of information. All those, and I'm quite lazy and have a functioning computer literacy of The Cat in the Hat level.

9. No one's actually sent you any questions, have they? You just did this to feel some pathetic sense of accomplishment.

Shut up.
