Profile - Ralph Doubell

Ralph Doubell - 1968

  • Born 11 February 1945
  • Australia/Victoria

800m runner Ralph Doubell was one of the stars of Australia's 1968 Olympic team.

Not rated highly before the Games, Doubell ran impressively in Mexico City, setting a new personal best - and Australian Record - in the semi finals of his pet event.

In the final, he improved further to equal Peter Snell's World Record of 1-44.3 (later rounded to 1-44.40) and win the Gold Medal.

Thirty-five years later, no Australian since has approached Doubell's record time.
