For many years, most
fans of athletics had been led to believe that organised women's
track and field in Australia only began in the 1920s.
While doing some research into performances of athletes in the past,
I discovered this was not the case.
Women's athletics in Australia had actually commenced much earlier
and an amateur women's association had been established in Sydney in
1913. Professional athletics for women was also popular around
this time, and state championships for female athletes had been held as
early as 1906.
In conducting this research, I came across 'forgotten' performances
(some of which were actually world records or bests) and a number of
interesting stories.
So, in 1996, I began to publish these findings on the internet to
help complete a truer History of Athletics in Australia. I hope
