Floriana Hall's "Unexplained And Unexpected"
It was a summer like no other
Remembered in my lifetime,
In a year unlike none other
When war interrupted peacetime.
A war that was unjustified,
Unnecessary and not over,
Reasons that were lies
With many questions leftover.
A summer so unsettled
With drizzle, rain, chilling bones
Although there were rose petals
Along with moans and groans.
Thunderbolts and flooded basements,
Washed out railroads and stranded cars
Sewage and musty, putrid scents,
Could it be the closeness of Mars?
Power outage darkness,
Candles flickering, no traffic lights,
In this summer starkness
Covering most northeastern skies.
Food spoilage and devastation,
More rats, mosquitoes and mold,
But we are a resourceful nation
Even with everything on hold.
Life goes on, we're back to normal
If there is such a thing
Neighbors helped, nothing formal,
Kindness misfortune brings.
Unexpected and unexplained season
Unlike former years taken for granted,
We must accept it without reason
Lest our lives become disenchanted.
