Kate Steere's "Another Sleepless Night"
Remember the happiness we shared
she whispered to him late one night
before he drifted off to sleep
as they listened to the late news.
she wondered what she would do when
he started to forget her, forget
the life they struggled to build.
she whistled the tune of the first
song they ever danced to, wrapped
around each other in her mothers' kitchen.
she wadded up the poem she was
writing for him, the words weren't worthy,
not strong enough to carry her passion.
she kissed him gently, and turned
off the light to face the darkness alone.
