Dans CyclingNews
Frenchwoman Jeannie Longo won the 28th edition of the Mt Washington Hillclimb in New Hapmshire, setting a new record in the process, and beating 1999 winner Genevieve Jeanson by 2 minutes. In third place was Marilyn Ruseckas of Vermont, but there was nearly a quarter of an hour between second and third. Longo clocked 58:14 for the torturous 12.2 kilometre ascent, at an average of 12.6 km/h, slicing nearly 4 minutes off Jeanson's record she set last year. The lack of wind helped, but Longo was reportedly 50 seconds down in the early part of the race before she overcame the young Canadian. Longo's time was better than all bar two of the men.
Le communiqué de presse d'avant-course :
Mt. Washington it's the tallest peak in the Northeast U.S., home to the the planet's highest recorded wind speed, and the site of the world's toughest bicycle hillclimb. But on August 19th, it will be a battlefield.
When the starting gun goes off at 7:40AM that morning, World Junior champion and women's Mt. Washington recordholder 17-year old Genevieve Jeanson of Quebec will defend her hillclimb record against reigning Olympic champion and 11-time world champion Jeannie Longo of France. Both of these world class competitors are travelling to New Hampshire to take on this leg busting event on their way to Sydney, Australia for the Olympics where they will represent their respective countries.
The Mt. Washington Bicycle Hillclimb is only 7.6 miles long, but it's arguably the toughest 7.6 miles ever raced. The road climbs 4,727 feet at an average 12% grade, with the final 200 yards at 22.5%. A third of the road is unpaved, and there are a total of 72 turns and switchbacks. The longest straightaway is only 3/10 of a mile, and it's on dirt. The wind chill factor plays a role almost every year, as Mt. Washington's summit winds are known as some of the most brutal in the world. Oddly enough, this year's 600 rider field was filled in record time by mid-June.
Current records for Mt. Washington are 51 minutes and 56 seconds for the men (set last year by Tour de France star Tyler Hamilton) and Genevieve Jeanson's women's mark of 1:01:57, which eclipsed the previous record by nearly 10 minutes. This year, all eyes will be on the women, as Jeansson and the Longo square off in what's sure to be a battle to the finish and for the $5000 purse that awaits the rider who can break these records.
