In Fig 9C a piece of soft iron inserted into the path of the field causes the field to warp and follow the path of the metal. | Fig 9c |
In the animation Fig 9d, if a piece of soft iron is introduced into the magnetic field it will cause the field to warp, if the piece of soft iron is released the magnetic lines of force will draw the soft iron to the magnet. The magnetic lines of force as stated earlier tend to act like an elastic band and will draw the soft iron to a point where the magnetic lines are shortest. If the soft iron is pulled back to the starting position, the lines of force will warp and follow, if the iron is released it will be drawn back to the magnet again by the lines of force. | Fig 9d |
