NOTE: Mileage
is recorded from Springer Mt., not Hightower Gap
Prior to leaving Hawk
Mountain be certain to fill your water containers. This portion of
section 1 is the most difficult and can be strenuous at times. The views
on this portion are better than earlier but are limited as well.
After descending quickly
into Hightower Gap, section 1 makes an aggressive change. Rising rapidly
out of the gap on loose rocky terrain you get an excellent idea of what
lies ahead - one reminiscent of the Approach Trail although not quite as
difficult. The ascents can be steep and rocky, the shin-splinter descents long, and switchbacks are almost non-existent. This regiment is consistent through Malden Gap at mile 8.2, a knob at 8.7mi, gap at 9mi, knob at 9.2mi... A long, steep, and rapid descent
spits you out into Horse Gap at mile 10 where FS road 42 intersects yet again. A just as rapid but longer ascent climbs literally straight up to the crest of Sassafras Mountain at mile 11. Views are available here but may be difficult to find and
depends on foliage.
Another possibly foot cramping descent ends at the junction of FS-42 and Cooper Gap. Of course this descent is followed
by yet another climb to yet another crest, Justus Mountain at mile 12. Some outcrops along the
ridges of Justus allow limited views and good lunch stops.
From here the
trail loses elevation quickly but not before climbing another small knob only to finally drop into Devil's Kitchen where water is abundant. Two footbridges cross the crystalline creeks and some wonderful campsites are nearby. Once
again, fill up your water here. Gooch Gap is only 2 miles away but is often
dry so don't rely on getting water there.
Leaving the Devil's Kitchen area through the tunnels of rhododendrons, the up-down routine
continues but on a milder course as the trail slowly gains elevation towards
Woody Gap. Following each unnamed knob is a named gap: Gooch Gap and FS
road 42 -16mi, Grassy Gap -17.3mi, Liss Gap -17.9mi, Jacks Gap -18.4 to
Ramrock Mountain, Tritt Gap -19mi, and finally Woody Gap at mile 20 (11.8
from Hightower Gap). Prior to reaching Gooch Gap the trail crosses a light, often dry, spring and steep steps to the right mark the loop trail to the shelter. This loop trail does reconnect with the AT at Gooch Gap.
Experienced and well-fit hikers can complete the entire
20 miles of section 1 in a day, but don't push your limits. Less experienced hikers often find themselves facing over exertion and should plan at least 2 days
for section 1. The level of difficulty may surprise you! Camping at Hawk Mountain then again at Gooch Gap should provide you with enough rest to make well into section 2 and to possibly reach Blood Mountain for the next night.
To continue your trek follow
Section 2 out of Woody Gap.
