Player Report:
Tero Penttila was a surprise signing from FC Haka, a team Rangers had comprehensively defeated in the qualifying rounds for the Champions' League.
But the tall defender caught Dick Advocaat's eye during the two games and he made a £300,000 move in November 1999.
Penttila had been a regular in the Finnish international squad and was pleased to have compatriot Jonatan Johansson at Ibrox with him.
It is Penttila's first move into full-time football and he has had to put his studies at medical school on hold for the time-being.
"I will probably continue my studies later on as I am now a full-time footballer," he said.
"Of course it is a little bit of a surprise to be here. You can't say you played well when a team scores seven times against you.
"I am looking forward to playing in front of big crowds at Ibrox. However, I will need a bit of time to adjust.
"I have always worked hard in spite of my studies but the training at Rangers is of a much higher tempo than I am used to.
"Having a fellow countryman like Jonatan Johansson here is good for me and he has been a big help."
Dick Advocaat was delighted to have secured the services of a player he compares to German international Thomas Helmer.
"Tero has a good touch, is good in the air and is very strong. He has been captain of his side.
"He didn't cost much when you compare him to the other players I have brought to the club and has a lot to learn. He has only been a full professional for one year.
"I think in style he is a bit like Thomas Helmer, the German international, and we will give him a chance, although it will take him time to settle in."
