Scott Wilson had sampled the dizzy heights of playing in the European Champions' League by the time he was nineteen.
He lined up in central defence alongside Richard Gough as Rangers took on Ajax and Auxerre.
Wilson, a product of the Ibrox youth system, has had to be patient, though, because of the fierce competition for first-team places.
But he has been assured about his future by manager Dick Advocaat and made his first start of the 1998-99 season in the thrilling 2-1 victory at Bayer Leverkusen in the UEFA Cup.
Wilson says: "I want to repay his faith in me by proving myself in the first team."
