TEX
EUGENE STILTNER was born December 1, 1944, and on February 26,
1996, he lost his life in a car accident. Tex was traveling home from work
on Route 460 (near Big Rock) at approximately 6:45 p.m. on a Monday evening when
the accident occurred, and he died at Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy at 8
p.m. After graduating from high school, Tex worked full-time in the
Produce Department at Piggly Wiggly in Grundy. He met Imogene Stiltner,
and they were married on August 17, 1966, at the home of Preacher Fred Stiltner.
He continued to work at Piggly Wiggly while he and his wife lived with his
parents at Poplar Creek. On December 1, 1966, Tex was drafted and left for
his tour of duty in the United States Army. He did his basic training at
Fort Bragg, North Carolina. His AIT was at Fort Gordon, Georgia, where he
trained in the communications field. Shortly after Tex was drafted into the Army, Imogene discovered that she was pregnant, and they soon became
parents for the first time. Tex left the U.S. in June, 1967, for Vietnam.
He spent a year there and returned home to meet his baby daughter, Jennifer
Denise, who was born on September 8, 1967; she was 9 months old when Tex saw her
for the first time. After a short stay in Grundy, Tex and his family moved to
Arizona. Tex's orders took him to Ft. Huachua, Arizona. There, he
and his family lived for 9 months, and then they returned to Grundy. Tex
then had a tour of duty in Frankfurt, Germany. He spent 9 months there,
and then returned home for good. On December 1, 1969, Tex, at the age of
25, began a career in coal mining. He worked for several companies and
individual during his total of 25 years in the coal mining industry. In
addition to working, Tex took classes at Southwest Virginia Community College.
Imogene says that Tex enjoyed their time spent at Cherokee Lake in Tennessee; he
also loved to fish, bow hunt, and spend time with his family. Most of his
time was spent on the job; he was
an avid and hard worker. Imogene adds, "Tex always tried to get along
with everyone he came in contact with. He was a good husband, father, and
grandfather." Tex and Imogene became the proud parents of four
children--Jennifer, Michael, Sharon, and Jeffrey; they also became the proud
grandparents of four granddaughters--Ashlee, Alexandria, Madison, and Emilee.
Additionally, a daughter-in-law, Renee Stiltner, and a son-in-law, Jeff, have
been welcomed into the family. Imogene wants to thank the Class of 1963
for including Tex's biography as a part of their 39th year class reunion web
site. It was with "great honor and sadness" that she wrote about
Tex's life. Imogene ends by saying, "Tex's legacy would have to be
about the way he lived his life and the effect it had on the people who cared
for him most. God bless you all!"
