Track and Field Team Handbook
Northwest High School

PHYSICALS
In order to play or practice any high school sport you need to have one physical on record with the school for each school year. A physical turned in for another sport will be good for Track and Cross Country. A physical form can be printed off of the school web site.. In addition to the physical, each athlete needs to be covered under some kind of health insurance plan. If you do not have health insurance it can be purchased through the school for a reasonable rate.
PRACTICE
Practice will be every day from 2:30 until 4:30. You are expected to attend practice every day or you will not be allowed to compete in meets. In order to compete in the first meet you need to have 14 practices. If you cannot be at practice you need to personally tell one of our coaches, leave a post in the web site or call school and leave a voice mail for me. (636)274-0555 extension 146

In order to participate in cross country or track and field the athletes need to supply a pair of running shoes andappropriate practice clothes. Any kind of athletic shorts and T-shirts are acceptable. It is alsorecommended that you purchase a pair of spikes to use in meets. Extra metal spikes can be purchased from me for ten cents each. The school will provide a uniform, sweat clothes, and other appropriate equipment, all of which must be returned to one of the coaches within one week of your last practice to avoid fines. Report cards will not be issued to athletes who have not turned in equipment or paid fines.

TEAM RULES OF CONDUCT
1.) Any out of school suspension of over ten days during the season will result in your immediate dismissal from the team for the season. Athletes are required to report all other discipline problems to one of the coaches and they will be handled on a case by case basis. You are better off if you get to me first.
2.) All athletes are expected to refrain from using cigarettes, drugs or alcohol at any time but especially during the season. Failure to do so will be handled with the athletes parents, in the best interest of the athlete and will likely result in dismissal from the team.
3.) In order to maintain the ability to perform at a high level during the long season it is important that each athlete get the appropriate amount of rest. Though a full time curfew for athletes is impossible to enforce it is asked that all athletes be in by at least 10:30 p.m. on the night before a competition. It is recommended that each athlete enforce the 10:30 curfew on themselves on all weeknights to ensure optimum performance at school and at practice.
4.) All athletes are expected to be respectful to all of his coaches and teammates at all times. Regardless of personal feelings or problems you need to remember that this is your team and every person involved with it is important. If a conflict arises it is to be brought immediately to one of the coaches so that it can be dealt with appropriately.
5.) All equipment is to be treated respectfully and used appropriately. (ex. Mats, Implements, Poles, Crossbars, ect.) Failure to do so could lead to fines for broken equipment and possible dismissal from the team.
6.) Any serious discipline problems that occur while the team is at an out of town competition will result in that competitors parents/guardians being called to come take them home from the event, and probable dismissal from the team.
7.) Most importantly, all athletes are expected to work hard in the classroom. Any classwork that is missed due to a Meet should be turned in immediately. Academic problems will be addressed by the coaches on a case by case basis.

Athletes on this team are expected to hold themselves to a higher standard than the average student in all situations involving conflict and questionable behavior, inside or outside of school.  A runner on this team is always representing his or her team and their school and needs to behave likewise.
